Core Responsibilities
Key Duties of the Position

Deliver high-quality instruction while fostering an educational atmosphere that promotes learning and encourages open dialogue regarding concepts, interests, and challenges. The primary responsibilities of part-time faculty include curriculum development and instructional delivery, with assignments allocated between lecture and laboratory sessions as determined by departmental needs. Part-time instructional staff are expected to be accessible to students beyond scheduled class times.

Compensation for Part-Time Faculty

The initial compensation for part-time instructors, as per salary schedule 11, is $102.90 per hour for lectures and $82.33 per hour for labs. For those holding a doctorate, the rates increase to $107.87 per hour for lectures and $86.30 per hour for labs.

Qualifications and Experience

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the discipline as established by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, as outlined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.

Master's degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics

OR Bachelor's degree in physics or astronomy AND Master's degree in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics

OR equivalent qualifications

OR
A combination of education and experience that is at least equivalent to the aforementioned qualifications. Candidates applying based on equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency along with all other required materials.

AND Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.

If the title of your degree does not exactly match one of the degree titles listed in the minimum qualifications, you must request an equivalency review and provide supporting documentation at the time of application. This includes a completed SBCC Equivalency Crosswalk and a narrative synopsis of your educational background justifying equivalency.

Transcripts must display the degree title and date conferred; otherwise, the degree will not be considered for minimum qualification assessment. If the qualifying degree is pending, transcripts indicating the degree title and anticipated completion date must be submitted. Diplomas are not acceptable substitutes for transcripts. An official copy of transcripts will be required upon hiring. Instructors cannot commence work until official transcripts are received.
  6. If claiming equivalency, attach a separate statement titled "Equivalency" in the online application, providing the basis for this claim along with supporting evidence.
  7. Foreign Transcript: Transcripts from institutions outside the United States require a course-by-course analysis with an equivalency statement from a certified evaluation service verifying degree equivalency to an accredited institution in the USA. This report must be attached to the online application.
  8. Letters of reference are not required for this recruitment. Please do not submit reference letters.

Application Process:

Selection Process:
The selection committee will review online applications and recommend candidates for personal interviews. A teaching demonstration will be required for selected applicants. Following initial interviews, the committee will recommend top candidates for final interviews. The successful candidate's name will be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval.
