Job Summary

This position is a Direct Hire Open Continuous Announcement for the Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) located in the Phoenix Indian Medical Center.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct medical care appropriate to their specialty area in various departments at the facility.
  • Order, perform, or interpret the results of diagnostic tests.
  • Analyze and interpret patient's histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
  • Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines.
  • Make decisions concerning medical care needs of patients, which may involve various treatment modalities, prescribed medications, consults, and referrals.
  • Diagnose or treat acute healthcare problems such as illnesses, infections, and injuries.
  • Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, dosage, and frequencies.
  • Counsel patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances.
  • Recommend interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks.
  • Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances.
Requirements
  • Must pass pre-employment examination.
  • Selectee may be subject to a probationary period.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • This is a designated position covered by Public Law, requiring contact or control over Indian children.
  • Confidential Financial Disclosure Form required.
  • Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957, and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service healthcare facilities.
  • The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements.
  • On-call hours or standby duty may be required.
  • Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part-time experience.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program.

This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position.

Area of specialties for positions may include, but are not limited to: Acute Care, Anesthesia, Family, Geriatric, Midwifery, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Allergy and Immunology, Women's Health, Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Occupational Health, Orthopedic, Respiratory, or other specialties identified for the position.

Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse positions must be licensed or registered by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.

The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.

In addition to the mandatory license and education described above under Basic Requirements, applicants must have at least one or more full years of Professional Nursing experience in the clinical specialty of the position that is equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12): Independent practice as a nurse practitioner, including duties like analyzing and interpreting patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses, prescribing medications, managing acute and chronic care conditions, and developing treatment plans.

This position is eligible for workplace flexibilities which may include remote work or telework options, and/or flexible work scheduling.

These flexibilities may be requested in accordance with the HHS Workplace Flexibilities policy.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6, or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.

IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-Federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.

This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

Recruitment and/or Relocation Incentives may be authorized and is subject to availability and service unit approval.

If offered, you will be required to sign a one (1) year service agreement.

Failure to fulfill the service agreement will result in repayment of the incentive.
