The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) plays a vital role in delivering direct patient care under the guidance of healthcare providers, registered nurses, or clinical coordinators, adhering to the New York State Practice Act. The LPN is responsible for sharing patient information with the healthcare team, which is crucial for the planning, delivery, and assessment of patient care. Compassionate care is a cornerstone of this role, ensuring respect for each patient's individual needs, values, and preferences.

Under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed independent practitioner, the LPN administers medications and vaccinations, while also observing, measuring, recording, and reporting clinical data related to the patient's health status. The LPN is trained to perform various clinical tasks, including urinary catheterization, tracheal suctioning, and sterile dressing changes, with appropriate documentation of training and competency.

Emotional support and educational resources are provided to patients and their families by the LPN. Additionally, LPNs oversee the care provided by unlicensed assistive personnel, such as medical assistants and patient care technicians. With the necessary specialized training and manager recommendation, LPNs may initiate IVs and administer blood products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately obtain and document vital signs of patients.
  • Record relevant components of patient history.
  • Engage in open communication with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Assist in in-office procedures under the supervision of licensed healthcare providers.
  • Conduct diagnostic CLIA waived testing.
  • Perform venipuncture for laboratory blood tests.
  • Handle prescription call-backs within the scope of practice.
  • Prepare patient charts with necessary clinical information.
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies and ensure examination rooms are well-stocked.
  • Comply with regulatory standards and guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  • Prior experience in a patient care environment is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Must possess a valid LPN license upon hire.

Physical Requirements:

  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of items.
  • Occasional climbing and balancing.
  • Regular communication and coordination tasks.

Working Environment:

  • Noise levels are consistently high.
  • Exposure to hazards is frequent.
