Department Overview

The Power Generation division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of various energy production facilities, including hydroelectric, fossil fuel, solar, and battery storage systems, delivering approximately 5,300 megawatts of capacity to our clientele.

Our dedicated workforce of nearly 900 professionals is committed to providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective energy solutions in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Our hydroelectric facilities encompass 62 conventional powerhouses, a pumped-storage facility, 98 reservoirs, 168 dams, and over 200 miles of canals and flumes, among other water conveyance systems.

We also operate natural gas-fired plants, including those located in Eureka, Colusa County, and Antioch, alongside several utility-scale solar generation facilities and our innovative battery energy storage initiative.


Position Summary

This role represents a journey-level Project Engineer position, necessitating expertise in the Associate level Project Engineer responsibilities. The role encompasses comprehensive engineering design, project management, and technical support for Operations and Maintenance (O&M) personnel regarding a variety of moderately complex issues and multiple medium to large-scale capital and operational improvements to power generation and infrastructure facilities.

The position demands a thorough understanding of job functions and proficiency in applying sound engineering and project management principles. Candidates should be recognized as professionally licensed engineers and possess a working knowledge of industry practices, standards, and equipment. The ability to develop and implement all facets of multiple assigned projects, exercise independent judgment, and demonstrate enhanced verbal and written communication skills is essential, along with the capability to work with minimal supervision.


Job Responsibilities

Manage multiple moderately complex issues and projects, resolving problems of moderate scope. Support senior engineers and project managers on larger, more complex projects. Assignments may require standard solutions but can also involve a moderate level of innovation.

Under limited general direction, independently plan work to meet assigned objectives, with progress reviewed periodically for technical accuracy and adequacy.

External contacts primarily involve directing project-related work and contract administration with contractors and vendors, as well as providing information and obtaining approvals from regulatory agencies.

Internal contacts are mainly with Power Generation personnel, including O&M clients and project team members, and typically involve directing project-related work, discussing and reporting progress, exchanging and coordinating information, managing meetings, and providing appropriate documentation.

May collaborate with internal or external stakeholders to resolve issues or explore alternative solutions.


Qualifications

Minimum:
A 4-year BS Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution in the US or an equivalent from outside the US is required. Successful candidates must obtain a California PE license within 18 months of hiring. Failure to secure the California PE license within this timeframe will result in a demotion to Associate Project Engineer.

Demonstrated mastery of the Associate level Project Engineer duties and the ability to perform the responsibilities of the Journey level Project Engineer.

Must meet specific technical requirements through a minimum of three years of cumulative experience in project engineering, design, and construction.


Desired:
A degree in Civil Engineering is preferred. Project Management Certification is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge and abilities required for the Associate level Project Engineer and also:
  • Able to manage and complete several projects concurrently, depending on scope and complexity.
  • Able to stamp and/or certify engineering drawings and documents.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated broad and in-depth knowledge of engineering and project management concepts, principles, practices, and design requirements for generation assets; ability to develop moderately complex design changes, project scopes, and project implementation plans; and provide more in-depth investigation and analysis support to O&M.

Proficient in business computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Suite Programs (with emphasis on Excel, Word, and MS Project). Familiarity with dam safety industry best practices and knowledge of dam safety FERC engineering guidelines and DSOD regulations is beneficial.

Track record of taking ownership of problems and their solutions, and identifying gaps between current business practices and stated objectives, providing recommendations for process improvements.
