Position Title: Lead Cataloging Specialist

Department: Collections & Exhibitions

Reports To: Director of Collections Cataloging

Employment Type: Full-time; Exempt

Compensation: $48,000/year


Position Summary:

The Lead Cataloging Specialist plays a crucial role in the documentation and accessibility of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture's published collections. This role involves the creation of catalog records and descriptive metadata, while also supervising the training and performance of staff, interns, and volunteers engaged in cataloging projects.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct original and copy cataloging, including descriptive and subject cataloging of published collections utilizing RDA, LCSH, LCC, and MARC21 standards.
  • Review and verify cataloging entries to ensure compliance with established practices.
  • Revise and enhance existing catalog records to facilitate improved access.
  • Supervise the activities of staff, interns, and volunteers involved in cataloging projects.
  • Engage in outreach initiatives to promote access to and enrich the understanding of the published collections and other resources.
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional teams and committees.
  • Assist library personnel with reference services as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of United States and Virginia history.
  • Proven experience in both copy and original cataloging within OCLC using RDA, LCSH, LCC, and MARC21 standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities; adept at prioritizing tasks and managing workflows.
  • Proficient in office-related software applications (word processing, database management, spreadsheets, email) and equipment (printers, photocopiers, scanners, etc.).
  • Ability to lift items weighing at least 40 pounds.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program is required.
  • A minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in original cataloging across various formats.
  • At least two years of experience in cataloging rare books.
