Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Aluminum Structural Fitter to join our Quality Support team. As a key member of our fabrication and repair team, you will be responsible for working with a team of Pipe Fitters and welders to achieve maximum production in minimum time, while maintaining high standards of quality and a positive team environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform tasks, work processes, and equipment operation with technical proficiency.
  • Accountable for completion of daily work assignments, including completion and signatures for work completion and quality.
  • Create a working environment compliant with quality, safety, environmental, and health regulations and policies.
  • Rig plates and equipment safely.
  • Understand directions and follow instructions.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization on assigned job sites.
  • Perform safe and effective use of craft-related tools and equipment.
  • Obtain GMAW ABS 'B' Class Weld Certification for aluminum applications.
  • Perform basic layout of plates, materials, and weldments using basic engineering sketches, drawings, and diagrams with minimal supervision.
  • Perform shipfitting functions, including fit-up of structure, cutting, sniping, sanding, grinding, prepping, tacking, and fit-up of plates with minimal supervision.
  • Perform fitting operations with limited supervision using standard shipfitting equipment to accomplish fabrication and ship repair duties.
  • Monitor working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental, and health regulations.
  • Be willing to work with and train lower-skilled workers.
  • Be available to work any shift and may be assigned additional tasks, including outside the craft as required.
Requirements
  • Minimum 1 year as a B-Class Fitter at Austal or 2 years in a related industry required.
  • Pass approved A-Class Fitter Test.
  • Demonstrate an acceptable proficiency and competency to Austal Supervision for an A-Class Fitters position.
  • Demonstrate ability to interpret and work from construction drawings, job specifications, instruction manuals, manufacturer's handbooks, change order, and contract specifications.
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment, work processes, and techniques used in measuring and fitting of aluminum components, modules, and vessels.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and measure using the metric system.
  • Knowledge of shipyard terminology, including general ship structure and vessel layout.
  • Knowledge of edge preparation and weld joint details.
  • Advanced working knowledge of engineering drawings and sketches.
Working Conditions

The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and heat and cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. PPE available and MUST be used correctly.

Education and Experience

Minimum 1 year as a B-Class Fitter at Austal or 2 years in a related industry required. Pass approved A-Class Fitter Test. Demonstrate an acceptable proficiency and competency to Austal Supervision for an A-Class Fitters position.
