Position Overview
As a vital member of the Public Works Department, the role involves providing specialized engineering knowledge and executing technical responsibilities associated with infrastructure projects, including bridges, culverts, levees, and stormwater management systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. Conduct field evaluations of county-maintained structures, ensuring compliance with federal inspection criteria.
2. Identify structural deficiencies and propose solutions for maintenance, rehabilitation, or replacement.
3. Maintain comprehensive records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.
4. Collaborate with various departments and agencies to disseminate bridge-related information as required.
5. Assist in the design and planning phases for bridge repairs and new constructions, including cost estimation.
6. Oversee construction activities, ensuring adherence to approved plans and specifications.
7. Perform inspections on levees and provide recommendations for necessary maintenance.
8. Engage with the Public Works team and external agencies to implement the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program.
9. Conduct stormwater inspections to safeguard waterways from pollution.
10. Review and approve land use permits and site plans for new developments.
11. Prepare and submit environmentally sensitive permit applications to state and federal agencies.
12. Participate in engineering meetings and assist with subdivision reviews as needed.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering is essential, along with a minimum of three years of relevant experience in civil engineering or construction. Candidates must possess a valid Montana Driver's license and licensure as a Professional Engineer or Engineering Intern. Additional certifications, such as FHWA Bridge Inspector Certification and Level II SWPPP Administrator Certification, are required or must be obtained within one year of employment.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
The position involves a mix of office work and field inspections, requiring physical stamina for activities such as climbing, bending, and lifting. Candidates should be prepared to work in various weather conditions and navigate challenging terrains.
