Compensation Range

$159,330 - $204,636 annually for SES.3 level

Please note that this compensation range serves as a general guideline. Various factors influence starting pay, including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Position Overview

This is a flexible term position contingent on project funding, with current funding anticipated for a minimum of two years.

The Bioscience and Biotechnology division within Physical and Life Sciences at LLNL is seeking a dedicated and skilled Research Scientist with a specialization in Neuroscience, possessing substantial experience in behavioral assessments, electrophysiology, and advanced molecular biology techniques. In this role, you will lead and conduct sophisticated research in cell and animal biology, contributing to our understanding of the brain for mission-critical programs. You will work on specific research projects, demonstrating initiative, resourcefulness, and meticulous attention to detail within a multidisciplinary team of scientists.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute in vitro experiments utilizing both 2D and 3D rat and human cell models.
  • Collaborate with fellow scientists on in vivo experiments, including behavioral assays and analyses.
  • Employ advanced cell and molecular biology techniques to explore mechanisms of brain injury and repair.
  • Analyze large datasets to refine, inform, and shape subsequent experiments.
  • Conduct literature reviews on cutting-edge methodologies relevant to the research focus.
  • Mentor and train early-career scientists and technicians.
  • Engage and collaborate with inter-organizational contacts and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports on research findings.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U.S. Citizenship.
  • Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive experience with human and rat neuronal cell cultures, including proficiency in electrophysiology, immunostaining, and assays such as flow cytometry and multi-omics.
  • Proficient in R for data analysis.
  • Advanced understanding of statistics for longitudinal datasets.
  • Significant experience in animal handling, sample collection, and behavioral testing.
  • Experience in multi-omics sample preparation and analysis.
  • Adept at working in a fast-paced environment, both independently and collaboratively with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and administrative staff.
  • Advanced knowledge of common software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office) and the ability to quickly learn new software tools.

Position Details

This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a specified duration not exceeding six years. If the final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained, subject to funding availability.

Security Clearance Requirement

This position necessitates a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If selected, a Federal background investigation will be initiated to assess eligibility for access to classified information. All employees with L or Q clearance are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
