Position Summary

We are seeking multiple skilled Thermonuclear Ignition Research Physicists to engage in groundbreaking research aimed at achieving thermonuclear ignition at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). This role involves close collaboration with experts from various fields, including laser experimentalists, laser scientists, target fabrication specialists, and NIF project scientists and engineers, along with other target designers and theorists. These positions are situated within the Design Physics Division of the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.

These roles may provide a hybrid work schedule, allowing for a combination of in-person and remote work. You may have the opportunity to work from home on designated days.

Positions will be filled at either level based on the candidate's knowledge and relevant experience as evaluated by the hiring team. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

Key Responsibilities

In this position, you will:

  • Plan, analyze, and interpret NIF laser experiments to support the ignition effort, primarily utilizing large computational codes alongside analytical modeling.
  • Conduct computational and theoretical analyses to extend our current understanding of ignition-related physics to NIF and beyond.
  • Collaborate effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team on ICF project initiatives.
  • Present research findings at scientific meetings, peer reviews, and in publications. Responsibilities may also include engaging with external stakeholders through offsite assignments.
  • Advocate for and support initiatives promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the program.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities at the SES.3 Level

At the SES.3 level, you will:

  • Independently develop and provide in-depth analysis of NIF laser experiments in support of the ignition effort, particularly using large computational codes and analytical modeling for complex problems.
  • Serve as a technical expert within a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must possess:

  • The ability to maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • A PhD in physics or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of plasma physics, hydrodynamics, or astrophysics.
  • Experience in computational modeling of complex systems.
  • A proven track record of developing innovative solutions to intricate problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality work within established timelines.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills, evidenced by a history of publications, invited presentations, or teaching experience.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary team and work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

We desire candidates with:

  • Experience utilizing large two- and three-dimensional computational codes.
  • A demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the workplace.

Security Clearance

This position necessitates a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If selected, a Federal background investigation will be initiated to determine eligibility for access to classified information. All L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.

Pre-Employment Drug Test

External applicants selected for this position must successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment drug test, which includes testing for marijuana use, in accordance with Federal Law.

Equal Employment Opportunity

We are an equal opportunity employer dedicated to providing a work environment free from discrimination and harassment. All qualified applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, marital status, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, medical condition, pregnancy, protected veteran status, age, citizenship, or any other characteristic protected by applicable laws.
