Key Responsibilities

The Chief Development Officer for The Soraya will report directly to the Assistant Vice President of Campus Development Programs and collaborate closely with the Executive and Artistic Director of The Soraya. This essential position involves comprehensive strategic planning to enhance fundraising initiatives for The Soraya.

  • In partnership with the Executive and Artistic Director, and the Senior Director of Development for the Curb College, the incumbent will lead efforts to identify, qualify, cultivate, and maintain relationships with donors. This role also includes expanding major fundraising and donor engagement activities by discovering new prospects whose philanthropic interests align with The Soraya's mission.
  • A deep understanding of fundraising dynamics within the arts sector is crucial. The Chief Development Officer should express a genuine passion for the arts and possess a profound understanding of their impact on students and underserved communities. Active participation in The Soraya's performances and events is expected.
  • Collaboration with The Soraya team is vital. This position will work closely with the Senior Director for the Curb College of Arts, Music & Communication to nurture major gift donors for The Soraya, as well as engage with University Development teams. A team-oriented approach to fundraising will be essential for success.
  • Utilize a CRM database to meticulously identify and engage new prospects from a diverse pool of over 100,000 existing members and ticket purchasers.
  • As a leader, demonstrate a commitment to student success that aligns with the university's vision and values. Foster an ethical and collegial work environment that promotes collaboration, accountability, and inclusivity. Encourage a resilient, solution-oriented atmosphere by engaging in new opportunities that advance the university's mission.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution; a master's degree is preferred.
  • Proven experience working effectively with high-net-worth individuals and Boards of Directors, ideally within the Los Angeles philanthropic community, with a successful track record of securing major gifts.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Leadership

  • Extensive knowledge of various art forms or in-depth expertise in at least one performing art, along with a solid understanding of philanthropy in the arts sector.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills to effectively convey the need for support and the impact of that support.
  • Strong ability to document a successful history of soliciting and closing gifts in the major gifts range, including experience in making cold calls and resilience in overcoming initial resistance.
  • Ability to thrive in a goal-oriented environment, working both independently and collaboratively. A passion for The Soraya's mission and programs is essential.
  • Outstanding planning, strategic thinking, analytical skills, and interpersonal abilities. Self-motivated and organized, with strong written communication skills for donor correspondence and promotional materials.
  • Lead diverse teams to support the operational mission by fostering an ethical, inclusive, and collegial work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive continuous improvement through courageous and catalytic leadership.
  • Engage in various initiatives with a collaborative and service-oriented mindset.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, with excellent fringe benefits offered.
  • This position is currently hybrid, with a combination of in-office and remote work; this arrangement may change based on operational needs.
