Overview

The Diocese of Nashville represents a vibrant and expanding community of over 100,000 Catholics across numerous parishes and educational institutions in Middle Tennessee.

This role is a direct report to the Bishop of Nashville, the Most Reverend J. Mark Spalding, who has been at the helm since 2018.

During his tenure, Bishop Spalding has facilitated the establishment of three new parishes, including the largest Hispanic parish in Tennessee, a new elementary school, and two middle schools, alongside a successful $51 Million capital campaign aimed at enhancing the church's future.

The diocese is also proud to have over 30 seminarians engaged in various stages of discernment. Bishop Spalding is in search of a reliable Chief of Staff and strategic visionary who is mission-focused, results-driven, and a dynamic leader in operations to assist in guiding the diocese towards its mission: Living and Proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ, Welcoming All.

Summary

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) position is crafted to enhance and optimize diocesan operations.

Reporting directly to the Bishop, the COO is tasked with executing the Bishop's vision and directives for the Mission Support Office, the Chancery, and various supporting Corporations that underpin the diocese's overall mission.

The COO is authorized to facilitate management alignment and resource distribution to strategically advance the diocese.

This role demands both professional expertise and personal dedication in overseeing the administrative and operational functions of the Mission Support Office while further supporting the diocesan community.

The COO will engage in numerous strategic, programmatic, financial, and administrative responsibilities aimed at fostering continuous improvement and growth.

This position is accountable for developing enhanced operational systems throughout the diocese and ensuring that service delivery adheres to best-in-class practices in business systems, human resources, development, and finance.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as the Moderator of the Curia as defined in the Code of Canon Law, coordinating administrative affairs and ensuring that diocesan curia members fulfill their roles effectively.
  • Establish goals, supervise, and hold accountable the finance, mission integration, operations, and development sectors, ensuring efficient management of their budgets.
  • Collaborate with Vicars General, Judicial Vicar, and Episcopal Vicars in governing the diocesan curia under the Bishop's guidance.
  • Foster mission alignment and operational efficiency within the diocesan curia to support the Bishop's priority of assisting pastors and parishes.
  • Serve as a corporate member of non-parochial Catholic entities under the Bishop's authority, overseeing policy and budget matters.
  • Enhance relationships with key partners and stakeholders, including local and state government, community entities, parishes, and corporate sectors.
  • Oversee accounting, IT, risk management, facilities, and cemetery operations through the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Manage human resources, safe environment, archives, communications, and public relations through the Chief Mission Integration Officer.
  • Direct the bishop's annual appeal, capital campaigns, special events, and donor relations through the Chief Development Officer.
  • Supervise the internal auditor function in collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to the Bishop regarding business services and the status of management decisions.
  • Handle sensitive situations requiring pastoral care in correspondence and statements.
  • Coordinate business services functions, ensuring team activities align with diocesan policies and funding responsibilities.
  • Prepare and present reports to various stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation and funding agreements in managing diocesan financial services.
  • Engage with funding bodies and other agencies as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer for the oversight of the annual independent audit of financial records.
  • Support parishes in effectively managing business services.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous quality improvement within business services and contribute to program reviews.
  • Develop and implement a compelling vision and sustainable business plan for finance, human resources, communication, and development areas.
  • Continuously evaluate short and long-term strategic financial objectives.
  • Advise diocesan leadership on financial implications of planned activities and funding strategies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Bishop.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Active and engaged member of the Roman Catholic Church with knowledge of its precepts and operational practices, committed to serving the Diocese of Nashville's mission.
  • Familiarity with Catholic organizations and their objectives.
  • 5+ years of experience leading a multi-service corporation with a budget exceeding $20M.
  • 10+ years of proven executive leadership in a complex organization (e.g., CEO, CFO, CMO, COO).
  • Bachelor's degree in a business-related field is required; advanced degrees or financial accreditations (MBA, MSCM, CPA) are preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of influencing and effecting positive change through collaboration.
