Summary

The Vice President of Human Resources, also known as the regional HR Business Partner, is tasked with aligning business goals with employee and management needs within designated business units. This role develops partnerships across the HR function to provide value-added services that reflect the organization's objectives. The HRBP maintains a thorough understanding of the business unit's financial status, strategic plans, culture, and competitive landscape. This position serves as the primary HR representative for American President Lines, LLC and its affiliated entities in North America, reporting to the Chief People Officer, North America. The role is supported by centralized centers of excellence and oversees a geographically diverse workforce in the maritime shipping sector, which includes both represented and non-represented employees.

Key Responsibilities

- Assess and anticipate HR-related needs; analyze workforce trends and metrics to formulate recommendations, solutions, programs, and policies.
- Actively contribute to the organizational budget process.
- Collaborate with HR and cross-functional stakeholders within a shared service model.
- Provide guidance on talent acquisition, development, performance management, retention, engagement, training, restructuring, workforce planning, and succession planning.
- Influence and recommend strategies for Labor Relations, clearly defining the HR role in the labor relations process in coordination with the CHRO and shared services.
- Partner with management to identify staffing needs and collaborate with Talent Acquisition to implement recruitment strategies.

- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of legal requirements related to employee management, minimizing legal risks and ensuring compliance.

- Work closely with management and employees to enhance work relationships, boost morale, and improve productivity and retention. Provide daily performance management guidance to line management (e.g., coaching, counseling, career development, disciplinary actions).
- Identify training needs for business units and individual management development. Participate in evaluating and monitoring training programs to ensure effectiveness, following up to meet training objectives.

Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Labor Relations, or a related field.
- Juris Doctorate (JD) with a focus on employment law is preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in Human Resources, including at least 5 years as an HRBP or HR Generalist in a Union environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of employment law at both Federal and State levels.
- Strong oral, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with executive-level presentations and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Preferred experience in the transportation, logistics, or maritime shipping sectors.
