Role Summary

As a vital member of our research team, you will conduct in-depth analyses to support advocacy initiatives related to science and democracy across various domains, including science policy, regulatory frameworks, and the integrity of scientific practices. You will collaborate closely with campaign teams, including those focused on policy and outreach, to achieve impactful policy outcomes. Additionally, you will serve as a representative on pertinent technical and policy matters to various stakeholders, including partners, donors, and the media. You will also play a key role in advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) within our research and advocacy efforts.

Key Responsibilities

Research and Analysis:
  • Conduct comprehensive research and analysis on topics related to science policy, regulatory practices, and scientific integrity. Monitor trends and emerging issues, interpreting relevant laws and regulations to forecast their implications and formulate policy recommendations for decision-makers.
  • Draft and refine research documents, including summaries, reports, blogs, and visual data presentations, to effectively communicate policy analysis and options.
  • Collaborate with CSD staff on diverse research tasks, including rapid media responses and report production.
  • Propose future research directions, ensuring alignment with principles of justice and equity.
Expertise and Communication:
  • Demonstrate the ability to distill complex research findings into clear, accessible conclusions for various audiences, including the public and policymakers.
  • Respond to inquiries from researchers, advocates, and the public regarding CSD-related issues.
  • Participate in relevant conferences, briefings, and training sessions.
Program and Campaign Support:
  • Assist in the development of program and campaign strategies, identifying key stakeholders and research opportunities.
  • Represent UCS in coalition meetings, fostering relationships with external partners and exploring collaboration opportunities.
Additional Duties:
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned, which may include temporary assignments or professional development opportunities.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Master's degree or Juris Doctor in a relevant field such as science policy, public policy, or a related social science discipline.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in policy analysis and advocacy, with a preference for experience in democracy reform.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects in fast-paced environments and quickly adapt to evolving topics.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, with experience in research project development.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific information for general audiences.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams and cultural contexts.
Work Environment:

This is a full-time remote position. Regular office hours are expected, with occasional evening and weekend work. Travel requirements are estimated at 10-15% for meetings and events.

Compensation:

The salary for this position is $90,600, with excellent benefits and a supportive work environment. A salary differential of 12% is available for California residents.
