About the Role

Brightworks Sustainability is seeking an experienced and qualified Senior Commissioning Specialist to lead our building performance team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for overseeing the commissioning process for various building projects, ensuring they meet LEED certification and code compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead Commissioning Team: Plan, coordinate, and manage a team of commissioning specialists to implement commissioning processes for building projects.
  • Commissioning Expertise: Understand and apply commissioning requirements for ASHRAE and green building certifications, including LEED, GPR, Green Globes, and code compliance.
  • Project Development: Collaborate with project teams to develop and provide guidance on Owner's project requirement documents and Basis of Design.
  • Commissioning Documentation: Prepare commissioning plans, training plans, specifications, pre-functional checklists, and functional performance tests.
  • System Review: Review and provide comments on complex HVAC systems, controls, plumbing, lighting, and electrical distribution, as well as renewable energy systems.
  • Client Communication: Recommend approval to clients and document work performed by the design team, contractors, and commissioning agents.
  • Reporting: Develop comprehensive reports on each commissioning phase, including recommendations for optimizing building operations, functional checklists, lists of deficiencies, equipment operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Team Management: Lead and manage external resources, schedule and direct periodic commissioning meetings, and attend construction and coordination meetings as required.
  • Client Interface: Interface with clients, contractors, testing technicians, equipment vendors, and owners as needed, ensuring professional assertiveness and project success.
  • Energy Auditing: Deliver building energy auditing and retro-commissioning services, including site investigations, energy savings calculations, and cost estimates.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: BS in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical or building commissioning experience.
  • Commissioning Authority: 7-10 years of experience as a Building Commissioning Authority.
  • Credentials: AABC Commissioning Agent (CxA), ASHRAE Building Commissioning Professional (BCxP), AEE Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), BCxA Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), NEBB Building Systems Commissioning Certification (BSC), University of Wisconsin Accredited Commissioning Process Authority Professional (CxAP), or Certified Energy Manager (CEM).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License
  • University of Wisconsin Building Enclosure Commissioning Process Provider (BECxP)
  • ASHRAE Operations and Performance Management Professional
  • LEED Accredited Professional (LEED BD+C, O+M)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Engineering Fundamentals: Excellent understanding of engineering fundamentals, ASHRAE Guideline 0: The Commissioning Process, ASHRAE/IES Standard 202: Commissioning Process for Buildings and Systems, DOE Retro-Commissioning Process Manual, FEMP Continuous Commissioning Guidebook, and ASHRAE Procedures for Commercial Building Energy Audits.
  • Troubleshooting: Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving aptitude.
  • Control Systems: Working knowledge and manipulation of control systems and sequence of operations.
  • Communication: Good presentation skills, flexibility to manage multiple tasks, and excellent time management skills.
  • Integrity: High sense of integrity, proficiency with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, and CxAlloy, and understanding of energy modeling.
