Position Overview

The Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) is dedicated to leading the Department of Defense in financial management and accounting, ensuring the provision of high-quality payroll and financial data.

This role is available at the entry-level grade of GS-04, with the potential for advancement to GS-05 upon successful performance.

Work Location: Indianapolis, IN. This position is not eligible for remote work.

Key Responsibilities
  • At the Full Performance Level, a Human Resources Assistant may undertake various tasks supporting one or more HR functional areas. Initial duties assigned at the entry level (GS-04) will focus on skill development.
  • Manage a range of personnel actions, including promotions, separations, benefits selections, pay adjustments, and updates to employee records.
  • Utilize automated systems to update, verify, and extract data, ensuring compliance with established procedures; identify the need for corrections and implement necessary changes.
  • Respond to inquiries from staff and current/former employees regarding personnel records, training history, benefits, and other HR-related information.
  • Provide comprehensive information about the Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) and Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) programs, including eligibility, enrollment, and fundamental features.
  • Perform various clerical tasks as required to support technical operations.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience: One year of progressively responsible clerical, office, or related work that demonstrates the ability to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for this position.

Experience can include both paid and unpaid roles, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. All qualifying experience will be credited.

Education

GS-04 Education Substitution: Two years of completed education beyond high school in any field may substitute for the required general experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered. Transcripts must be submitted if education is used to substitute for experience.

  • Work Location: Indianapolis, IN. Situational telework may be approved based on mission needs and supervisor discretion.

Applicants will be assessed based on how well they meet the qualifications outlined above. The evaluation will utilize the Category Rating and Selection Procedures, placing eligible candidates into three categories:
  1. Best Qualified Category - Exceeds minimum qualifications and demonstrates high proficiency in job-related competencies.
  2. Highly Qualified Category - Exceeds minimum qualifications and shows proficiency in some job-related competencies.
  3. Qualified Category - Meets minimum qualifications as described.
Assessment Questionnaire: This will take approximately 15 minutes to complete and will gather information on your education, training, and experience related to critical competencies such as Attention to Detail, Communication, Customer Service, HR Technology Usage, and Human Resources Concepts, Policies, and Laws.
