Job Summary

The University of Washington is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Strategic Development Leader to join our team as an Assistant Vice President for Units and Strategic Development Initiatives. This is a full-time, permanent position that will play a critical role in leading a group of assigned units and programs, serving as a strategic thought partner, collaborator, advocate, and cohort leader to unit leadership.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Management (40%)
    • Provide oversight and strategic management to program units, including KUOW, KEXP, UW Continuum College, and UW Libraries.
    • Guide and support unit Chief Advancement Officers (CAOs) in achieving established fundraising metrics and goals.
    • Attract and retain top-level team members with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives who are committed to the University's mission and values.
    • Foster a culture of high performance and creativity among the assigned CAO cohort, encouraging inclusive management and leadership practices through training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
    • Ensure assigned cohort units, and their respective CAOs and leadership teams, are campaign-ready by helping craft a compelling vision, identify prospects and volunteers, and develop meaningful engagement strategies.
    • Collaborate and partner with other Development leaders, central Advancement teams, and other University stakeholders to encourage multidisciplinary engagement and collaboration across all fields of Advancement.
    • In close collaboration with CAOs and central Advancement teams, ensure the successful planning and execution of fundraising programs, including principal, major, and planned gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundation gifts, donor recognition, and stewardship.
  • Strategy and Program Development (30%)
    • Oversee and manage Advancement-wide major gift initiatives of presidential and University priority, such as the University-wide major gift initiatives, specifically those identified as presidential priorities.
    • Serve as a liaison to UA executive leaders and volunteer boards in service of developing and driving strategies that ensure fundraising goals are met.
    • Oversee and manage University-wide major gift initiatives, specifically those identified as presidential priorities.
    • In partnership with Development leadership, coordinate comprehensive professional development training for frontline fundraisers, Advancement team members, and academic partners.
    • Oversee UA-wide major gift pipeline and cultivation initiatives; partner with central Advancement teams who manage these complex activities.
    • Collaborate with CAOs and Advancement leadership to build and implement programs that align with strategic priorities set by deans, chancellors, and University leadership.
  • Frontline Fundraising (30%)
    • Actively manage a strategic portfolio of donors and prospects for presidential and University-wide fundraising priorities.
    • Work collaboratively with UA leadership and the Principal Giving team to secure gifts in support of these priorities.
    • Collaborate with the VP for Development and campus leadership to establish ambitious, realistic, and measurable major gift fundraising goals for assigned projects.
    • Partner with UA leadership to plan and execute activities in support of assigned projects.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree AND at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience within the field of development.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive administrative and leadership experience in a large, complex higher-education or fundraising environment, including evidence of vision and effective strategic planning and implementation.
  • Fundraising experience at a comprehensive research university or health-care institution. Demonstrated success at major gift fundraising and working knowledge of gift planning vehicles (charitable trusts, gift annuities, and complex outright gifts).
  • Prior campaign experience.
  • A commitment to, and demonstrated success in, promoting diversity and inclusion among staff and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated success developing and deepening authentic relationships with a wide array of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • History of creative, inclusive, strategic, collaborative work in partnership with executive leadership.
  • A leadership style based on integrity, transparency, and inclusiveness, with a proven ability to influence others beyond formal authority.
  • Ability to effectively and strategically manage resources, including time, talent, and finances.
