Brooklyn, United States Center for Popular Democracy Full time

Position Title: National Organizing Manager, Housing

Position Location: Candidates are welcome to apply from across the U.S. Those that are near a CPD office in DC or Brooklyn may be asked to work from a CPD/A office one or two days/week if necessary. Applicants outside of those areas may be required to travel to a CPD/A office occasionally.

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a National Organizing Manager, Housing. This is a full-time, exempt position.

About CPD + CPDA:

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We work with nearly 50 affiliates in over 30 states and Puerto Rico to build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations that envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position:

We are seeking a National Organizing Manager, Housing to join our Campaigns Department.

The National Organizing Manager will lead a cohort of CPD/A affiliates and other movement partners to develop and win transformative campaigns that focus on a just housing system where everyone has a Home to Thrive. This role will provide a range of direct strategic campaign support to CPD/A affiliates in collaboration with staff from CPD/A’s Housing Justice Team, the Base-building Team, and the Communications Team, among others, to help win local and state campaigns. This role will also help lead a national base-building effort, Renters Rising, to organize tenants in corporate landlord properties across the country. As part of the Housing Team, the National Organizing Manager will also support affiliates to build a national movement to transform the housing market. It is expected that the National Organizing Manager, Housing will travel and attend in-person trainings, meetings, and actions with CPD/A affiliates and partners approximately once a month.

We estimate that candidates will have about 10 years of relevant experience, but our review of candidates for this role will focus on whether they can fill the needs of the position, not years of experience.

This position will report to the Director of Housing and Healthcare Campaigns.

Primary Responsibilities:

The National Organizing Manager, Housing will:

  • Support CPD/A affiliates to build and win state and local housing campaigns, base-build, and develop leaders;
  • Provide direct campaign strategic planning, including research, base-building support, campaign design, and support plan implementation;
  • Lead the Housing Justice cohort, which includes organizing to maintain turnout, planning and preparing meeting agendas, and prepping affiliate speakers;
  • Oversee and lead a political education program to facilitate shared learning between affiliates;
  • Collaborate with other CPD teams, including Research, Communications, and Base-Building;
  • Produce fundamental organizing and campaign-building tools, including research and policy briefs and digital and communications toolkits, to support affiliates;
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with relevant organizations and coalitions to move relevant campaigns;
  • Have an active role in program fundraising, including individual and institutional fundraising.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Significant experience in organizing and local/grassroots campaign development;
  • Demonstrated basebuilding experience;
  • Relevant understanding of the current housing system, tenant protections, social and public housing, eviction defense, and the impact of the unjust housing system on Black and brown communities;
  • Experience in campaign and policy research;
  • Ability to build relationships of trust and mutual respect with a broad range of people;
  • Strong facilitation meeting skills;
  • Experience working with CPD’s affiliates;
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred, but not required;
  • A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep understanding of challenges facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, communities of color, disabled people, LGBTQ+ folks, and people at the intersections of the above communities.

Hiring Process:

Applicants should expect to participate in two rounds of group interviews and a job simulation exercise. Final candidates will be asked to provide references.

Salary and Benefits:

This position is included in a collective bargaining unit represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild. Specific employment terms are subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The salary for this category 3 position is determined by a salary calculation system that is set by the CBA and is not negotiable. The starting salary is $78,000 and can increase up to $88,000, depending on a variety of factors as described in the CBA.

We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 15 vacation days your first year, 12 sick days per year, additional PTO, including holidays, and contributions to individuals’ 401K plans.
