Job Description

Reporting directly to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Director for Alumni Engagement maintains close working relationships with the Alumni Association leadership, University President, Institutional Advancement division staff, and other University partners. The Director for Alumni Engagement has the primary responsibility of strengthening relationships between McMurry University and its alumni, to create a spirit of philanthropy towards the University, and to provide strategic oversight for alumni engagement and programming within the context of the Institutional Advancement Division and University goals. The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, innovative, and has proven strengths in motivating and managing volunteers.

Essential Duties Summary
  • Direct and supervise day-to-day activities of the alumni office.
  • Directly responsible for staffing and managing the Alumni Association Board of Directors and its various committee chairpersons in the performance of their duties and talents for maximum advancement of the University.
  • Plan, organize, promote, and execute Homecoming, Spring Alumni Weekend, and annual alumni awards event, graduate celebration events and engagement, student engagement and philanthropy efforts, and other alumni and special events on and off campus.
  • Assist in preparing and responsible for operating within the annual budget for Alumni Engagement.
  • Advise the Vice President for Institutional Advancement on issues relating to alumni relations and the Alumni Association.
  • Assist the Vice President in achieving goals and objectives of Institutional Advancement.
  • Manage and coordinate integration with all McMurry University departments, faculty, staff, and students to ensure alumni engagement activities are aligned with university strategic priorities.
  • Coordinate the implementation of broad-based programs emphasizing expansion of alumni engagement with the University and its various academic, arts, and athletic areas.
  • Strengthen communications and cooperation between various alumni components of the University.
  • Keep records of activity including events and contact reports.
  • Oversee creation and production of digital communications, marketing materials, and publications for alumni engagement, following McMurry brand standards.
  • Oversee social networking strategy and alumni social media channels.
  • Manage and help maintain Division web pages.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications on The Messenger, McMurry's magazine for alumni and friends, and serve as editor. Collect information and write articles as necessary.
  • Manage a portfolio of prospective donors to assist development officers in cultivating and maintaining an active alumni donor portfolio.
  • Periodic out-of-town travel, as well as evening and weekend work is required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree is in Public Relations, Management, or Marketing or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in alumni relations or similar field of experience.
  • Budget and volunteer management experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices in alumni relations and alumni board and volunteer management.
  • An understanding and working knowledge of social media.
  • Ability to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision.
  • Leadership, coaching, and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships.
  • Strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make decisions.
  • Ability to network and interact as well as support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals.
  • Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects, as well as conduct research and gather information.
  • Consulting and change management skills.
  • Ability to represent the University and its role in the community to a diverse pool of constituents.
  • Excellent oral/written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of current computer systems and relevant software packages.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed.
