Job DescriptionJob Description

The Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute (HHRI) has an opportunity for a Research Scientist to support the research being conducted by Dr. Derek Lumbard and Rachel Nygaard, PhD within Hennepin Healthcare's Department of Surgery research team. This is an onsite role requiring a presence in downtown Minneapolis, MN.

You will utilize equitable and community-centered approaches to collaboratively lead research, program evaluation, community needs assessments, and community engagement work with service recipients and community members, prioritizing Black, Indigenous, and Communities of Color.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead the design, conduct, and management of large, complex, multi-stakeholder research/evaluation projects and long-term initiatives that involve collaboratively or independently identifying community and program needs, formulating and clarifying objectives, identifying primary and secondary data sources, designing data collection tools, collecting data, analyzing data, interpreting findings, and developing recommendations.
  • Develop and implement new models, standards, and approaches for culturally appropriate and equitable research, evaluation, and community engagement.

  • Engage and train staff, internal and external partners, service recipients, and the community in the development of study instruments and protocols to ensure successful definition, design, and implementation of research/evaluation projects.
  • Ensure that data collection and sharing processes accurately capture high-quality information and uphold data management and privacy best practices without traumatizing or exploiting research participants.
  • Conduct research-related activities including interviews, survey creation and dissemination, community mapping, literature reviews, and data analysis.
  • Draft, review, and edit reports and presentations of research/evaluation findings and recommendations for a wide variety of stakeholders and audiences.
  • Cultivate and maintain complex and collaborative relationships with service providers and communities experiencing marginalization and barriers to opportunity.
  • Apply and share knowledge of trauma-informed practices to actively resist the traumatization/retraumatization of individuals and communities.
  • Design and implement innovative, mixed-methods data collection approaches including surveys, interviews, focus groups, observational studies, case studies, storytelling, and other tools to support community engagement, performance management, and research/evaluation goals.
  • Analyze both quantitative and qualitative data to generate comprehensive insights and actionable recommendations.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Education/Experience:

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be a Master's degree or PhD in an applicable social science-related field with 3-5 years of experience/knowledge in community-based participatory research, preferably with vulnerable populations. A Bachelor's degree with significant relevant experience may be considered.

The following experience is preferred:

  • Working with community partners from diverse communities of color and building/managing research partnerships.
  • Experience within communities, community-based and grassroots organizations, volunteer/committee work, or neighborhood/church groups.
  • Familiarity with areas to be assessed in the community plan (e.g., violence prevention, youth development, economic development, civil legal aid, or reentry).
  • Demonstrated experience in mixed-methods research, including both quantitative and qualitative approaches.

Skill, Knowledge & Ability (SKA):

Requires interaction with a diverse population, including community members, scientists and public health professional across a variety of institutions, health system leaders, and staff. Prior experience working with diverse and underrepresented populations. A strong desire to work with multi-disciplinary collaborators. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Comprehensive understanding of scientific theory and methods. Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
