Senior Research Scientist

Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States University of Minnesota Full time

Job ID: 9742R5

Location: Twin Cities

Job Family: Research-Researchers

Full/Part Time: Full-Time

Regular/Temporary: Regular

Employee Class: Acad Prof and Admin

About the Position:

The Translational NeuroEngineering Laboratory (TNEL) at the University of Minnesota is on the lookout for a PhD-level Senior Research Scientist (Researcher 5) to spearhead preclinical initiatives focused on neural oscillations and oscillation-locked neurostimulation. Our lab is dedicated to innovating technologies aimed at addressing a range of critical health conditions, including PTSD, major depression, addiction, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Our primary focus is on "responsive" or "closed-loop" technologies that actively monitor and respond to patients' brain activities.

This role emphasizes the exploration and enhancement of the brain mechanisms underlying these technologies. You will autonomously design and implement experiments utilizing preclinical models (primarily rats, with some human and non-human primate collaborations). The objective is to investigate fundamental questions surrounding oscillation-locked stimulation, such as: What conditions are essential for altering brain rhythms? Which rhythm characteristics correlate most closely with behavior? How can we refine our experimental processes to yield more consistent results? By addressing these inquiries, we aim to develop versatile tools for brain network modulation, which could form the foundation for innovative treatments across various disorders.

We are particularly interested in candidates for the Senior Research Scientist position, ideally suited for individuals seeking a long-term role that allows for significant autonomy within a collaborative environment. If aligned with your career aspirations, there may be opportunities to act as Principal Investigator on research projects tackling these inquiries, from both applied and fundamental perspectives. Anticipated outcomes include both peer-reviewed publications and commercial ventures (patents, licensing activities). For those considering this position as a stepping stone to a traditional tenure-track faculty role, we may be able to offer a more conventional postdoctoral fellowship.

Key Responsibilities:

  • (20%) Design and conduct preclinical experiments focused on activity-dependent brain stimulation.
  • (10%) Maintain meticulous experimental records with a strong emphasis on detail and completeness.
  • (20%) Analyze and summarize experimental findings for internal review and scientific dissemination in peer-reviewed venues, utilizing both written and graphical formats.
  • (20%) Contribute to the development of future research agendas and funding proposals, including significant independent technical writing.
  • (10%) Ensure compliance with all relevant governmental and institutional regulations, including the drafting of formal protocols for approval and maintenance of pertinent records.
  • (20%) Recruit, train, and supervise bachelor-level research technicians to support all of the above activities.

You will engage with a dynamic and thriving neuroscience community, with ample opportunities for collaboration and networking with clinicians, human-oriented basic scientists, and engineers. This collaborative effort is a fundamental aspect of this role, as you will strive to identify universal principles for brain network manipulation.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant research discipline (Engineering, neuroscience, psychology, physics, computer science, or robotics).
  • Previous experience in neuroscience, particularly with electrical brain stimulation or recording.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex technical concepts to non-experts, as evidenced by a record of peer-reviewed scientific communication.
  • Demonstrated ability for independent work, problem-solving, and initiative, as confirmed by references.
  • Interpersonal skills suitable for collaboration in a multidisciplinary and diverse environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience specifically in closed-loop stimulation or the biology of neural oscillations.
  • Strong quantitative and engineering skills, especially in electrophysiological data analysis.
  • Familiarity with optogenetic or pharmacogenetic techniques (or related cell-specific manipulations).

About the Department:

The Translational NeuroEngineering Laboratory (TNEL) at the University of Minnesota is dedicated to pioneering research aimed at developing technologies for treating serious health conditions. Our work primarily involves responsive technologies that interact with patients' brain activities, focusing on oscillation-locked stimulation to induce neuroplasticity and modulate emotional and cognitive functions.

Benefits:

At the University of Minnesota, you will experience a flexible work environment and supportive colleagues committed to lifelong learning. We prioritize work-life balance, enabling you to invest in your career and personal life. Our comprehensive benefits package includes:

  • Competitive salaries, paid holidays, and generous time off.
  • Continuous learning opportunities through professional training and degree programs.
  • Affordable medical, dental, and pharmacy plans.
  • Healthcare and dependent care flexible spending accounts.
  • Employer contributions to retirement plans.
  • Employee assistance programs.

Diversity:

The University values diversity and inclusion, recognizing their importance in enriching the employment experience and supporting our academic mission. We are committed to attracting and retaining employees from diverse backgrounds.

Employment Requirements:

Any employment offer is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. Criminal convictions do not automatically disqualify candidates from employment.
