Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a part-time Veterinarian Consultant II.

The Veterinarian Consultant will work in the Research Service Veterinary Medical Unit (VMU) with the facility supervisor and the Veterinary Medical Officer (VMO). The Veterinarian Consultant will serve as a back-up to the current VMO.

Schedule: Very occasionally the Veterinarian Consultant will be placed on uncontrolled on-call/stand-by status and may be required to respond to a call to report to work within 1 hour.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Point of contact to advise on animal care and animal compliance issues on an intermittent basis;
  • Check animal health;
  • Handle emergencies related to animal health on site;
  • Perform scheduled anesthesia and procedures for large animal species in the absence of the VMO;
  • Serve as a backup for the VMO.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Required:
    • Veterinary degree (D.V.M.);
    • Enrollment in an ACLAM-approved residency program, ACLAM eligibility, or ACLAM diplomate status required;
    • 1+ years of experience as a laboratory animal veterinarian;
    • Experience working with rodents, rabbits, aquatic species, and swine;
    • Knowledge of relevant animal research regulations;
    • Ability to independently advise researchers and veterinary staff on health and care of laboratory species;
    • Ability to respond to a call to report to work within 1 hour is required;
    • Ability to comply and abide by safety and sanitation procedures and laws;
    • Ability to follow directions and procedures;
    • Good communication skills;
    • Ability to work in a team environment.
