Position Overview

The Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is at the forefront of scientific exploration, supporting a robust research initiative within the VA Hospitals. We are currently seeking a dedicated Research Scientist in Life Sciences to join the Llorente Lab. This role involves the independent design, execution, and leadership of fundamental and applied research projects in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and fellow research professionals.

The selected candidate will focus on developing innovative stem cell therapies aimed at enhancing the regeneration of damaged spinal cord tissues and the corticospinal motor system (CST) through glial cell modulation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilize advanced biological methodologies involving live animal models (mice), animal tissues, and in vitro human or animal cell cultures.
  • Collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator to design and implement laboratory experiments, serving as the primary contact for experimental activities.
  • Develop and validate experimental protocols to ensure rigorous scientific standards.
  • Conduct data analysis from experiments and prepare visual presentations for dissemination.
  • Author scientific papers for publication, contributing to the body of knowledge in the field.
  • Maintain laboratory organization and provide guidance and training to laboratory technicians as needed.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator.

Qualifications

  • Essential: Ph.D. in a relevant field.
  • A minimum of three years of research experience in neuroscience, particularly in spinal cord injury biology, stem cell biology, molecular biology, or a closely related area.
  • Desirable: Academic background in biology, cell biology, neuroscience, molecular biology, bioengineering, or a similar discipline.
  • Experience with spinal cord injury models, behavioral assessments, hiPSC cell culture, stem cell differentiation, and RNA sequencing.
  • Strong understanding of scientific research methodologies and the ability to troubleshoot experimental challenges.
  • Exceptional record-keeping and documentation skills.
  • Proficient organizational abilities and strong scientific writing skills, with a proven track record of first-author publications.
  • Knowledge of safe handling and storage of biohazardous materials.
  • Competence in general laboratory techniques, including micro-pipetting, PCR analysis, and protein assays.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
