Reports To:      Sr. VP Government Affairs

Location:          Washington, DC (The staff is required to be in the office three days per week. There is an ability to work remotely on Monday and Friday)

 

 

Key Responsibilities/Duties:

 

  • Serve as the lead advocate for the supplier industry on federal and state policy issues.
  • Represent the industry before the U.S. Congress and the Administration as well as with select state policymakers.
  • Enhance and extend the industry’s existing network relative to Members of Congress, Congressional staff and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) of relevance to the industry.
  • Provide strategic guidance to MEMA executives and to the Sr. Vice President of Government Affairs on key policy issues.
  • Develop and execute a government affairs strategy to allow for the achievement of key objectives for the supplier industry.
  • In coordination with the government affairs team and MEMA member companies, develop and implement policy objectives on a federal and state level.
  • Oversee and manage staff (Sr. Manager Government Affairs and Manager of Grassroots) providing guidance and direction to allow for the prioritization of issues and the proper delegation of tasks.
  • Provide strategic guidance to MEMA membership on key policy issues.
  • Serve as the director of the MEMA Government Affairs Committee (GAC) which serves as the main conduit for gathering member company feedback and input on critical issues. Work with MEMA staff to enhance and grow the GAC.
  • Participate in Council meetings to brief MEMA member companies on policy concerns, provide regular updates to members (via verbal and written forms of communication), and engage with company executives to enhance industry participation in MEMA’s advocacy program.
  • Lead the legislative staff in the creation of coalition budgets and the design and implementation of grassroots campaigns.
  • Engage actively with other industry groups and the larger business community to pursue MEMA’s objectives.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:


  • Knowledge of politics and policymaking and of current affairs.
  • Demonstrated ability to steer complex issues through the legislative process.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise fashion and to explain the manner in which legislative initiatives may impact business.

 

 

 

  • Familiarity with the importance and role of industry associations in the larger policy and legislative process.
  • Ability to negotiate on behalf of association members with government and non-government entities to reach consensus on legislative priorities.
  • Experience in working collaboratively with other team members to achieve desired goals and objectives.
  • Ability to be flexible, to adapt rapidly to changing situations and to prioritize demands.
  • Interest in the mobility sector and general manufacturing concerns.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements


  • BS/BS degree in related field required; graduate degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years substantive work experience.
  • Previous association and/or Capitol Hill experience is a plus.
  • Equivalent combination of educational experience.

 

Physical Requirements:


  • Lift, bending, sitting for extending period of time and other physical demands
  • Occasional travel may be required
