Legislative and Policy Analyst – Next City
Next City, a leading nonprofit organization focused on urban issues, is seeking a dedicated Legislative and Policy Analyst. This pivotal role within our Government Affairs Department will be instrumental in advancing our advocacy efforts. The Analyst will conduct thorough research on legislative initiatives, policies, and regulations at various governmental levels, including federal, state, and local jurisdictions. Additionally, the role may involve some international research, particularly concerning Canada, the EU, and Africa.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legislative and Policy Research: Analyze and interpret legislation introduced by various governmental bodies. Identify and prioritize relevant legislative and policy proposals that align with Next City's mission. Maintain accurate records using legislative tracking software and summarize committee hearings and federal rulemaking.
- Government Outreach Support: Draft advocacy communications to lawmakers and government officials. Prepare talking points to assist our members in their outreach efforts. Engage with government officials and legislative staff to further our advocacy goals.
- Program Management: Create newsletters and articles to inform stakeholders about our initiatives. Support high-level meetings by compiling essential background information and developing briefing materials. Assist in organizing outreach efforts and managing online resources.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience.
- Experience in government affairs, lobbying, or working with membership organizations. Familiarity with energy efficiency and building standards is a plus.
- Strong analytical skills with a proven ability to assess legislation.
- Excellent writing and research capabilities.
- In-depth knowledge of the legislative process.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a collaborative spirit.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new software quickly.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- A self-motivated individual with a commitment to ethical standards and teamwork.
