Under the direction of the Director of Education, the Youth Development Specialist will be responsible for reaching youth and families empowering them to create sustainable change through prevention efforts aimed at ending juvenile delinquency in the targeted community within the 79107 zip code; developing and implementing youth leadership development programs, mentoring services, family engagement events, community awareness and social marketing/media initiative in the 79107 community; serve as an adult ally to the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC); coordinate activities with relevant organizations and agencies to create community mobilization initiatives.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  1. Be a spokesperson for creating public awareness about the attitudes and beliefs that tolerate sexual and domestic violence and Human Trafficking in the community.
  2. Implement supportive and educational programs for youth and families which specifically address the prevention of juvenile delinquency in the community.
  3. Facilitate youth leadership programs such as Rising Up, Teen Truth and Peers Making Peace offered to participating elementary, middle, high school campuses and on community and faith-based sites.
  4. Provide required leadership to YAC students planning and participating in service-learning projects, activism, awareness, the Teen Summit and all prevention education initiatives.
  5. Work toward providing culturally sensitive educational materials and programs to the YAC and 79107 community.
  6. Provide all reports to the Education Director in an accurate and timely manner.
  7. Treat clients, staff and all education participants with dignity and respect.
  8. Network and partner with community organizations for support, collaboration and assistance.
  9. Responsible for representing Family Support Services as a professional resource at community meetings, events and coalitions.
  10. Responsible for maintaining the professional image of the agency and its mission.
  11. To keep current in education trends by participating in recommended conferences, courses, trainings, staff meetings and other activities for professional growth.
  12. Responsible for the development and implementation of primary prevention strategies and activities using the CDC Framework for Prevention.
  13. Responsible for conducting and implementing an ongoing comprehensive primary prevention planning process to strengthen community readiness.
  14. Coordinate efforts to engage the community in primary prevention strategies and readiness activities.
  15. Conduct primary prevention Approved Activities as appropriate in the community.
  16. Research primary prevention evidence-based programs and initiatives to ensure activities are in line with statewide and local movements.
  17. Obtains approval by Supervisor before purchasing curriculums, and/or educational materials/supplies.
  18. Responsible for conducting on going local needs and resource assessment as a part of the primary prevention implementation process.
  19. Ensure required outcome measures are collected and accurately calculated.
  20. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Education.


Qualifications:


  1. Associate degree or two years of college preferred in the area of psychology, education, marketing, sociology or other behavioral science but not required.
  2. Prior experience and skills in teaching, event planning, facilitating groups and communicating effectively.
  3. Prior training and or experience in Cultural Competency.
  4. Ability to demonstrate effective listening, communication, and written skills.
  5. Experience in planning, organizing and implementing evidenced and or theory-based programs addressing the root causes of our community’s most pressing issues.
  6. Must be able to lift to a minimum of 25 pounds.
  7. Physically able to reach, climb, stand, kneel, crouch/stoop, squat, and the ability to climb stairs.
  8. Valid Texas Driver’s License and proof of liability insurance.
