Job Summary: The Community Organizer will direct, organize, mobilize, and empower local youth to be leaders for their community by educating, planning, and directing youth-initiated services and advocacy projects, leadership training curriculums, and meetings. This position will manage and coordinate Youth for Single Room Occupancy (YSRO), providing training and supervision to YSRO youth, volunteers, and youth interns. They will manage and coordinate community service-learning programs with youth, such as digital literacy classes, intergenerational programming, disaster preparedness for monolingual low-income seniors and families. If you are looking for a team setting that allows you to mentor and guide young people, this is the job for you. We’re looking for a person who wants to develop, guide and mentor high school students especially those from immigrant background. 

This position will work with youth to implement environmental education and activities from the Public Utilities Commission, California Parks & Recreation and Stop AAPI hate grants. 

Status: Full-time, Nonexempt, Regular 

Location: Chinatown neighborhood, San Francisco

Hours: General business hours including flexible hours; frequent weekends and some weekday evenings

Salary: $33.10 - $34.84 per hour; Comprehensive Benefits

We own and/or manage approximately 36 affordable housing buildings serving over 4,500 low-income seniors, single adults, formerly homeless adults, and families of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds in San Francisco’s Chinatown, Tenderloin, Western Addition, and Polk Gulch neighborhoods. What You Will Do

Youth for Single Room Occupancy (YSRO):  

  • Manage the YSRO program  
  • Direct, organize, mobilize, empower and provide leadership development to local youth to be leaders in their community:
    1. Plan and implement youth-initiated services and advocacy projects 
    2. Coordinate and facilitate YSRO youth meetings and workshops, and work with YSRO to conduct membership recruitment and outreach 
    3. Develop, coordinate, and conduct youth leadership trainings and workshop curriculums 
    4. Manage and coordinate youth service-learning programs (i.e., intergeneration programming, creative community-building, SRO children's program for Super Sunday events, Stop AAPI Hate, etc.) 
    5. Recruit, supervise, mentor, and coordinate work for youth interns and volunteers 
    6. Coordinate social events for youth including retreats, holiday parties, BBQs, etc.
    7. Represent organization and build relationships with other San Francisco youth programs, high schools, community agencies, city agencies and departments 
    8. Attend and speak at community meetings, public hearings and collaborative meetings dealing with youth issues and community needs 
    9. Perform advocacy on youth issues and community needs in San Francisco  
  • Represent organization in advocating on youth issues and community needs 
  • Make public presentations on program work as needed 
  • Assist in grant writing and grant reporting 

Other 

  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships and alliances with youth groups in San Francisco 
  • Work with other staff on joint projects as appropriate

What You Bring

  • Ability to build strong rapport with youth 
  • Strong leadership, mentorship, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong public speaking and public relations/marketing skills 
  • Ability to be flexible and perform a variety of tasks 
  • Sensitivity to the needs of low-income and monolingual populations, particularly to the youth population 
  • Good listening skills and ability to exercise patience and flexibility 
  • Ability to work independently as well as in team structure 
  • Capacity to work evenings and weekends 
  • Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of Chinatown neighborhood and community resources 
  • Good computer skills, including facility with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher 
  • Grant writing skills 

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)

  • ​​​​​Bilingual in Chinese and English
  • 1-2 years of experience running youth programs and working with youth, particularly those from low-income, immigrant communities and low-income clients
  • 1-2 years of experience in program planning, facilitating meetings, and conducting training 
  • 1-2 years of experience working with the Chinatown neighborhood and issues relevant to the community 
  • 1-2 years of experience in grant writing
  • Experience working with youth and young adults aged 14-22
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Work, Excel, Canva, Google Docs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Ethnic Studies, Community Development, Social Work, Psychology, Education, Human Development, Political Science  
  • Familiar with San Francisco neighborhoods and populations
  • Experience in public speaking, public relations 
  • Knowledge in community and housing issues impacting low-income populations
