Position Overview

The Organizing Director at Sacred Heart Community Service plays a pivotal role in steering initiatives aimed at fostering a community where every individual is liberated from poverty. This position requires a seasoned organizer who can innovate, lead, and integrate efforts to cultivate grassroots leaders and forge alliances while spearheading campaigns that tackle the fundamental issues of poverty and inequality.

Key ResponsibilitiesCommunity Organizing (50-60%)
  • Oversee the formulation and execution of outreach and organizing strategies, including training, communication systems, and tactical plans.
  • Lead recruitment initiatives through various methods such as canvassing, personal meetings, and community outreach.
  • Coordinate action committees to establish a robust, ongoing organization and ensure active participation from grassroots leaders.
  • Manage a federated committee structure, focusing on nurturing advanced leadership to set campaign objectives and coordinate training.
  • Design and implement training sessions on diverse topics including member recruitment, public speaking, campaign planning, and social change theory.
  • Facilitate participatory action research with community leaders.
  • Guide the development of grassroots action campaigns, including effective planning and coalition recruitment.
  • Support the professional growth of organizers and program staff in community mobilization efforts.
Policy Advocacy (20-30%)
  • Assist in crafting and executing the policy advocacy strategy in collaboration with organizational leaders.
  • Identify opportunities for policy advocacy that align with the organization's mission and values.
  • Work with stakeholders and community allies to enhance their capacity for engaging in advocacy campaigns.
Management Infrastructure (15-25%)
  • Oversee the tracking and reporting of program goals and performance metrics.
  • Lead the continuous improvement of advocacy and organizing policies and procedures.
  • Manage the recruitment and oversight of organizing volunteers and interns.
  • Provide direction and support to organizing staff, including recruitment and training.
  • Facilitate media relations efforts and support resource development for the organizing program.
Collaborations (5-15%)
  • Build coalitions with key community partners and serve as a liaison with organizing collaborations.
  • Support the implementation of training and support systems for coalition partners.
Leadership (5-15%)
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of programs, events, and outreach efforts.
  • Participate as a member of the Senior Management Team and manage on-site operations as needed.
  • Attend Board meetings and fulfill other assigned duties.
Qualifications
  • Strong commitment to the vision of a community free from poverty.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and understanding culturally competent practices.
  • Five to seven years of experience in community or labor organizing.
  • Proven ability to inspire and motivate community members.
  • Experience in grassroots leadership development and campaign planning.
  • Management experience of at least three years.
  • Proficiency in database systems and web-based communications.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is preferred.
