The Center on Policy Initiatives is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to advancing worker and economic justice since its inception. As a pivotal think tank in the San Diego County area, we engage in research, develop policy solutions, foster leadership growth, and mobilize efforts to secure policies that uplift working families and diverse communities.
Role Summary
The Center on Policy Initiatives is in search of a Lead Organizer. This role is essential for collaborating with the Organizing team to devise and execute strategies that empower workers, particularly from Black, Indigenous, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Latinx, and other marginalized communities. The Lead Organizer will spearhead and support campaigns in partnership with campaign teams and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and Implement Organizing Strategies: Cultivate grassroots power for working families and communities through effective base-building initiatives, including recruitment and leadership development.
- Coalition Management: Build and sustain strong coalitions, enhancing relationships with strategic partners and allies.
- Event Organization: Plan and execute actions, events, political education sessions, and community meetings.
- Mobilization Efforts: Coordinate canvassing and outreach activities, including phone and text banking.
- Digital Strategy Collaboration: Work alongside the Communications team to enhance digital organizing efforts.
- Progress Tracking: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of organizing programs and strategies.
Leadership Development:
- Oversee the implementation of the Students for Economic Justice Summer Internship Program.
- Expand the Students for Economic Justice initiative into a comprehensive year-round program across multiple college campuses.
- Design and conduct training sessions focused on organizing and political education.
Strategic Campaign Development:
- Facilitate collaborative campaign planning, including goal setting and strategy formulation.
- Ensure alignment of campaign communications, research, policy, and organizing efforts.
- Engage with external groups, community leaders, and public officials to further strategic objectives.
Organizational Duties:
- Raise public awareness regarding CPI's initiatives and campaigns.
- Maintain accurate organizing data and document progress toward objectives.
- Support the overall mission of the organization.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required.
Qualifications:
- Proven commitment to the mission of CPI, emphasizing worker justice and equity.
- A minimum of four years of organizing experience with increasing responsibilities in labor or grassroots organizations.
- Experience in cultivating grassroots leaders and activists.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and execute campaigns from inception to completion.
- Proficient in leading training sessions on organizing methodologies.
- Experience in recruiting and managing volunteers for outreach initiatives.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse communities.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work independently.
- Excellent time management and facilitation skills.
- Strong communication abilities, both verbal and written.
- Self-motivated with problem-solving capabilities.
- Proficient in technology tools relevant to the organization.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English, both verbal and written.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in leading successful campaigns.
- Background in coalition organizing.
- Familiarity with policy campaigns.
- Experience in digital organizing.
- Knowledge in areas such as worker justice, education equity, housing justice, or environmental justice.
- Connections to regional organizing networks.
Autonomy: Moderate to high
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Capability to sit or stand for extended periods during meetings or while using a computer.
- Frequent movement including sitting, standing, walking, and reaching.
- Required to push, pull, lift, and carry as necessary.
Transportation & Travel Requirements:
This role necessitates regular travel throughout the area using a personal vehicle or reliable transportation. Mileage reimbursement is provided for authorized travel.
