The Director of External Affairs will play a critical role in shaping and executing the organization’s strategic communication, partnership development, and engagement initiatives. This position will be instrumental in amplifying Opportunity@Work’s (O@W’s) mission and expanding its reach and impact. The Director of External Affairs will require a mix of the ability to develop and measure a multi-channel communications strategy; and execute activities with critical stakeholders across the workforce field. The Director will serve as the primary communications point of contact with key partners to ensure mutual benefit, exposure and alignment with organizational goals.
This position will report directly to the Chief Engagement Officer and serve on the wider Engagement team inclusive of Resource Mobilization and Market Development. The team will operate as a collective to ensure that external affairs activities serve as a catalyst for further cultivation of and/or scaling opportunity with aligned funders, partners and networks that share the same objectives to advance STARs hiring and mobility in the U.S. and across the private and public sectors. 
Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Communications:
    • Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies to enhance the visibility and influence of O@W; ability to equip our partners with compelling storytelling and narrative assets. 
    • Craft compelling narratives and messaging that resonate and spark action for STARs terminology adoption and solutions with diverse audiences including partners, policymakers, employers, and the general public.
    • Oversee the creation, execution, and dissemination of a multi-partner (e.g. press releases, newsletters, reports, and other communication materials) production strategy (e.g. press releases, newsletters, reports, and other communication materials) alongside the Marketing team.
  1. Partnership Development & Execution:
    • Identify, engage, and cultivate strategic partnerships across O@W’s networks inclusive of Tear the Paper Ceiling coalition members, STARs Public Sector Hub, philanthropic partners, and market activation stewards with organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders to advance their unique roles and leadership in promoting STARs hiring and mobility. 
    • Collaborate across the organization to develop value propositions and messaging that is clear, compelling and tailored to a diverse set of constituencies including C-suite business executives, hiring managers, workforce development partners, policymakers, think tanks, academics, and staff.
    • Work with the O@W team to identify and optimize STARs stories and ambassadorship across O@W’s partners, STARs Advisory Council, and other networks/marketing channels.
  2. Events/Engagement Forum Management:
    • Identify, plan, organize, and execute high-impact events including conferences, workshops, webinars, and convenings. This includes both external events and O@W-owned events to engage stakeholders within O@W’s networks.
    • Manage event logistics, inclusive of agenda development, speaker prep and coordination, venue and A/V details, etc. with appropriate O@W team members; assist with vetting, logistics and work back plans for proactive and reactive speaking requests; coordinate calendars and schedules across teams and organizations as needed.  
    • Oversee event promotion and outreach to leverage and maximize attendance, engagement and impact.

  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to craft compelling messages and engage diverse audiences.
  • Relationship Building: Strong interpersonal skills with a proven track record of building strong and collaborative relationships with colleagues, partner organizations (inclusive of C-suite partner relationships), journalists, and other stakeholders.
  • Project Management: Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • People Management: Effective people and project management skills, including staff development and experience successfully managing outside agency partners. 
  • Event Planning: Experience in planning and executing large-scale events and public engagements.
  • Public Affairs: Understanding of policy and public affairs with experience engaging with policymakers and advocacy work where appropriate. 
  • Team Leadership and Participation: Ability to lead, participate and motivate a team, fostering a collaborative, fun() and results-oriented work environment.
  • Agility: Experience in a fast-paced, dynamic environment that requires collaboration, problem-solving and comfort with ambiguity.
Preferred Experience
Lived experience as a STAR (Skilled Through Alternative Routes instead of a bachelor’s degree), or direct experience working with STARs
BenefitsWork Environment: Work is regularly performed in a hybrid environment (e.g., a professional office and remotely) and uses standard office equipment. Expected travel is 15%.
