New York, New York, United States DAY CARE COUNCIL OF NEW YORK INC Full time

Position: Director of External Affairs, Child Care Resource Center (CCRC)

The NYC Child Care Resource Center (CCRC) Consortium stands as the foremost and largest multilingual shared-leadership collaboration within the child care and family services sector. Our mission encompasses educating policymakers, training and supporting child care providers, and empowering parents and caregivers to access high-quality child care services. We are in search of a Director of External Affairs to enhance our visibility, cultivate strategic partnerships, and represent the Consortium in public discussions.

About the Consortium

The Consortium is comprised of four independent not-for-profit organizations: the Child Development Support Corporation, the Chinese-American Planning Council, the Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, and the Day Care Council of New York. Together, we deliver comprehensive services to children, families, and child care providers throughout New York City's five boroughs. Each organization contributes unique expertise, focusing on targeted outreach in Latino, Haitian, and Asian communities, engaging with employers and unions, advocating for public policy, and possessing a profound understanding of the complexities within New York City's child care and early education systems.

Over the past 26 years, we have diligently worked to enhance our services. At this pivotal moment, we aim to broaden our influence and will rely on the Director of External Affairs to spearhead these efforts. The ideal candidate should possess a deep passion for early childhood education and child care, demonstrating resourcefulness, strategic thinking, and agility. Proven leadership and experience in customer relationship management are essential, along with the ability to handle sensitive information and proficiency in drafting reports, presentations, and dashboards for both internal and external audiences.

Role Overview

As the Director of External Affairs, you will be instrumental in leading our external relations and advocacy initiatives. Your responsibilities will include enhancing the organization's visibility, influencing public policy, and securing resources to further our mission.

This position is based at the Day Care Council of New York, where you will collaborate closely with the Consortium's four executive directors, CCRC Directors, and their teams. Under the guidance of the executive directors, you will serve as the spokesperson for the Consortium, working to elevate our public profile.

The ideal candidate excels in consensus-building leadership, effectively managing relationships with senior leaders to achieve unified decisions. Strong influencing and persuasion skills, strategic communication abilities, and the capacity to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics with diplomacy and tact are essential. Your problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills, combined with emotional intelligence, resilience, and patience, will foster an environment of mutual respect and collaboration. Building credibility and trust through transparency, integrity, and consistent delivery on commitments will be key to aligning diverse perspectives toward common organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

While the role will evolve, immediate responsibilities include:

  • Acting as a spokesperson for the Consortium, engaging with partners, funders, and government agencies.
  • Meeting with legislators to position the Consortium as a visible leader on early care and education issues.
  • Collaborating with Consortium policy teams to educate stakeholders and prepare op-eds, briefs, and case statements.
  • Coordinating with marketing and policy teams to develop and disseminate public materials such as policy statements, annual reports, and news releases.
  • Utilizing research, evaluations, and insights from the Consortium's program services to secure additional funding for expanded services.
  • Working with development staff to identify and pursue funding sources and grant opportunities.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years of experience in early childhood education, human services, nonprofit organizations, or the philanthropic sector.
  • Familiarity with New York City and State government in the education and human services sectors.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the early childhood education landscape, including key issues, challenges, and opportunities.
  • At least five years of project management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with a history of collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies and community organizations.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools and social media platforms for advocacy and public relations.
  • A high level of integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages for varied audiences.
  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Bilingual skills are preferred.

Employment Details

This is a permanent full-time, exempt position requiring 35 hours per week. The salary for this role is $110,000, and the position is eligible for the benefits package offered to full-time staff.

While a hybrid work arrangement is currently available, this position may necessitate up to five days in the office and regular in-person engagements with the public. The role will be based in midtown Manhattan but will involve time spent at all four organizations and in the field.
