SUMMARY: The Director of Grants and Foundation Relations is a pivotal position for the New Horizons agency, bringing in financial resources to support the agency’s Strategic and Operating Plans. Supports the Development Department in other key areas to ensure that the department’s goals are met, and acts as key support to the Senior Director of Advancement and Communications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

1. Responsible for researching, preparing, submitting and managing grant proposals and reports that supports agency goals while meeting funder guidelines and criteria.

2. Meets with identified staff prior to submitting all grants to ensure that the funding opportunity meets agency goals, that expenses and deliverables are approved, and that a tracking system is developed for managing expectations for the grant(s).

3. Ensures acknowledgement of funders/investors via website, e-newsletters, social media and other methods of communication.

4. Meets with key funders and donors to build the relationship with New Horizons, and regularly checks in to keep these relationships active.

5. Interacts with Board and Emeritus Council members, identifying potential leads for grants and foundation contacts. Reports any successful connections to the Senior Director of Advancement and Communication, the CEO, and other leadership so that Board/Emeritus members may be acknowledged for their contributions.

6. Maintains a master calendar of grants and prospects and all associated files and correspondence. Maintains library of grant support documents including resumes, bios, Bylaws, 990s, Member demographics and other pertinent information.

7. Actively participates in the fundraising for events.

8. Works closely with other members of the department to support other functions associated with the department.

9. Researches statistics, trends and data for grant proposal and community advocacy.

10. Provides support for Annual Giving, Capital and other campaigns.

11. Believes and supports the agency’s mission, vision and core values. Works effectively with co-workers, Members, volunteers and others by sharing ideas in a constructive and positive manner; listens to and objectively considers ideas and suggestions from others; keeps commitments; keeps others informed of work progress, timetables, and issues; addresses problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical solutions; addresses others by name, title or other respectful identifiers; and respects the diversity of the New Horizons workforce in actions, words, and deeds.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

1. Serves as back-up to the Senior Director of Advancement and Communication.

2. Works with other development and marketing staff as well as other agency staff and Board/Emeritus members to develop a comprehensive public relations program that includes speaker’s bureau, media relations, and community relations.

3. Represents New Horizons at community events and meetings.

4. Attends board meetings and other meetings as directed by the Senior Director of Advancement and Communication and/or the Chief Executive Officer.

5. Supports the Agency’s mission and partners with others to accomplish the mission.

6. Maintains the highest professional and ethical standards at all times.

7. Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position may supervise staff within the Development Department. In that event, carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, the candidate must have 5+ years direct experience in grant writing. Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • The employee must have an in-depth understanding and/or a willingness to learn about the agency, its goals, and methods by which these goals must be realized.

  • Must have knowledge and successful experience in development best practices, especially related to annual campaigns, major events, and donor relations.

  • Must have an excellent ability to organize, inspire and to delegate responsibility to volunteers to increase involvement and development success.

  • Must be highly organized and possess excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Must be highly computer literate in Word, Excel and have the ability to learn and actively navigate donor-related software related to the department as needed. Must be able to conduct research through the internet and other sources.

  • Must be able to work effectively with the Development team, other staff, volunteers, the public, and Members with developmental disabilities.

  • Must be flexible to meet the needs of unexpected assignments and to work evening and weekend hours as needed.

  • This person will need to drive occasionally for various community visits. The individual should have a dependable vehicle, proof of vehicular insurance, and a driving record acceptable to the agency’s insurance carrier.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. At least two years of development experience in a non-profit environment.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret in English general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write in English reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information in English and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
