Position Overview:


We are in search of a Senior Financial Grant Accountant who will oversee the fiscal management of Head Start and Early Head Start programs, along with associated federal, state, and other funding sources to support these initiatives.

This role involves preparing financial statements, conducting analyses, and developing budgets and narratives for funding proposals in collaboration with program management.

The Senior Financial Grant Accountant will also carry out routine accounting functions, review accounts payable transactions, monitor budgets, and assist in reviewing the work of other staff engaged in grant and contract activities for Head Start and Early Head Start.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for funders, Policy Council, and program management.
  • Track expenditures and budgets for assigned contracts/grants, reporting any discrepancies with the approved budget to the Head Start Director and other program management.
  • Develop budgets and prepare reports, demonstrating a solid understanding of Performance Standards, Head Start Act, Uniform Administrative and Cost Principles for federally funded programs, State Funding Terms and Conditions, and other funding source requirements, along with operational policies.
  • Conduct grant close-out activities, including reconciliations, final invoices, financial status reports, liquidations, and timely submission of accurate reports.
  • Record monthly revenue and corresponding receivables.
  • Review weekly cash drawdowns to comply with agency policies and funding regulations.
  • Ensure accuracy in general ledger entries, preparing adjusting journal entries as necessary.
  • Examine accounts payable transactions for correct expense codes, cost allocation, funder approval, allowability, allocability, and reasonableness. Provide training to the program team to ensure understanding of these principles.
  • Participate in or present at monthly Policy Council meetings to provide financial reports and updates.
  • The Senior Financial Grant Accountant may be assigned additional tasks to support departmental and agency objectives.
Qualifications:


Proficient knowledge of GAAP, Uniform Administrative Requirements and Cost Principles, budgeting, cost allocation, and non-profit accounting; strong computer skills, including intermediate proficiency in Excel with knowledge of vlookup, sumif, and linking; adept in using computerized accounting systems, including report creation and template development; and familiarity with other Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred experience with Blackbaud Finance Edge NXT.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, or in business with a focus on accounting or finance. Extensive relevant work experience in accounting may substitute for formal education.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in accounting or finance, including general ledger reconciliations and financial statement preparation; preferred experience in non-profit accounting, financial reporting, and budgeting for government-funded contracts and grants.
