Introduction

Overall purpose: To lead the development and delivery of a bold and effective philanthropy program (trusts & foundations and major donors) and raise philanthropic income at the five and six-figure levels.


Emerging Public Leaders seeks a Philanthropy Manager (Trusts and Major Donors) to lead on US-based philanthropy and build and manage a strong portfolio of donors and prospects capable of giving major gifts ($10,000+) to support the organization’s mission and operations.


Reporting to the Director of Sustainability and Communications (based in Africa), the Philanthropy Manager, will play a key role in helping us grow our philanthropy from individuals and family foundations in the US. This role will be responsible for building and managing a pipeline of prospective major donors, developing cultivation and engagement strategies, and creating donor collateral. They will work closely with the team based in the US – the Director of Finance and Operations, Communications Associate, and US-based board members. They will also coordinate closely with the Executive Director and her office, to ensure maximum impact of her trips to the States.


This is an exciting time to be joining Emerging Public Leaders as the organization expands rapidly, supported by a major partnership with various foundations and builds on fifteen years of philanthropic support through an active board of trustees and founder chairperson. The new Philanthropy Manager is part of the team needed to deliver a three-year Sustainability Plan developed with our partners, growing income from $3m to $5m by 2026/7.

Core responsibilities

Major gifts

  • Design a major gifts plan, and develop tailored engagement and stewardship plans to increase revenue and deepen engagement;
  • Manage and build a portfolio of active and prospective mid-level individual donors with a goal of $500k in contributed revenue annually;
  • Research and qualify prospective donors via wealth screening tools, phone calls, and in-person conversations;
  • Create stewardship materials (donor reports, email newsletters, and other collateral as needed), in collaboration with program and communication colleagues;
  • Work with finance to track and reconcile gifts received, and develop and track grant budgets as appropriate; and
  • Review existing CRM and establish a robust process that captures all activities.


Trusts and foundations

  • Research and identify a short list of trusts and foundations in the US aligned with EPL’s mission, and the countries in which we operate;
  • Draft grant proposals and reports, coordinating across teams to gather information and creating best-in-class submissions for family trusts and private foundations;
  • Lead all donor compliance on reporting and liaise with the Director of Programs and Learning on reporting and monitoring where the grant agreement requires it; and
  • Serve as a representative of Emerging Public Leaders to internal and external audiences.


Qualifications

  • At least five years’ experience personally leading successful relationships with high-value philanthropic donors (trusts and foundations, corporates, or high net worth individuals or equivalent), including those giving at the six-figure level,
  • Experience in pipeline and relationship development in the US and/or African diaspora;
  • Excellent communicator with experience working with remote teams in different countries and cultures;
  • Confident in working with budgets and financial information;
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with strong attention to detail;
  • Experience working with a fundraising database to maximize relationship development;
  • A commitment to EPL’s mission and vision and the ability to articulate EPL’s programs and strategy in a compelling way; and
  • Self-starter and persistent, able to thrive in a fast-growing organization while being flexible and adaptive. 


Preferred Experience

  • Experience designing and delivering a new major gifts plan, establishing systems and processes, and meeting ambitious targets for a non-profit focused on US donors;
  • Experience in high-value fundraising in international development, youth inclusion, governance and democracy, and gender equality in Africa.
