About PACE

PACE (Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement) serves as a philanthropic incubator dedicated to enhancing both individual and collective efforts to fortify democracy and civic engagement across the United States. Our approach is grounded in curiosity and pragmatism, as we strive to foster vibrant civic discourse through learning, collaboration, and experimentation. We uniquely position ourselves within the philanthropic sector by creating inclusive spaces for funders of varying sizes and perspectives to convene, engage in dialogue, and develop practical tools that enhance philanthropic practices. Our primary audience consists of our expanding network of 75 members, while we also aim to influence a broader spectrum of civic-minded philanthropic leaders.

Our Objectives

We pursue four key objectives to amplify our impact:

  • Enhancing and deepening relationships within and beyond the traditional civic philanthropy and democracy sectors.
  • Innovating philanthropic practices through research, learning, and experimental initiatives.
  • Increasing knowledge of the civic philanthropy landscape, grantmaking practices, and innovative experiments.
  • Fostering collaborations within and outside the PACE network to creatively address existing gaps in civic philanthropy.

The Role

The President/CEO is tasked with leading the strategic vision, cultivating thought leadership, engaging with the board, managing talent, and overseeing the daily operations of the organization. This includes strategic and operational responsibilities as well as stewardship of PACE's finances, staff, programs, and partnerships. Initially, the focus will be on staff management, nurturing organizational culture, and overseeing operations, including financial management.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strengthening Infrastructure and Operations:

  • Engage with the Board of Directors to support their strategic and fiduciary duties.
  • Secure diverse financial resources, including membership dues and grants.
  • Oversee financial health through effective planning and monitoring.
  • Enhance operational systems to ensure efficiency and sound financial controls.

2. Staff Leadership and Development:

  • Direct and manage staff, fostering an inclusive organizational culture.
  • Provide constructive feedback and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Support professional development and growth initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with partners and stakeholders.

3. Representing PACE:

  • Act as an ambassador for PACE's mission at various events.
  • Advance strategic communications and enhance field positioning.
  • Serve as a spokesperson in media and sector events.
  • Guide the implementation of strategies and refine future plans.

4. Programmatic Oversight:

  • Support current programmatic initiatives in member services and learning.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop a strategic plan aligned with PACE's mission.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a blend of the following experiences and skills:

  • Experience managing inclusive networks, particularly those involving diverse foundations.
  • Proven leadership in developing a diverse team in a remote environment.
  • Engagement in civic engagement and democracy reform fields.
  • Strong people management and intercultural competencies.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and remote communication tools.

Leadership Attributes:

The next CEO should be aligned with PACE's vision and principles, demonstrating initiative, relational skills, and the ability to navigate complex challenges with a flexible and detail-oriented approach.

Employment Status: Full-Time, Salaried, Exempt from overtime.

Reports to: Board of Directors.

Supervises: Managing Directors of Funder Engagement and Learning.

Compensation: Competitive salary with performance-based incentives and comprehensive benefits.

Work Environment: Virtual/Remote, with occasional travel required.
