San Francisco, California, United States Charm Industrial Full time

About Charm

Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO2. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron.

Our carbon removal pathway took off in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft. Since then we've scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, over a hundred employees, and now have three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Kansas. Come join us in 2024 as we aim to become one of the first companies to put 10,000 tons of carbon back underground

We're looking to expand our team of ambitious creative and hands-on forward-thinking humans. We value psychological safety and collaboration. We take calculated risks and don't sweep mistakes under the rug; instead, we pin them to the wall and learn from them. We value that everyone's unique backgrounds and perspectives shape their work. We encourage you to read our company values.

Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust

About the Role

The Senior Techno-Economic Analyst will play a critical role in defining Charm's long-term engineering roadmap by building detailed models that help evaluate future costs and carbon efficiency of Charm's biomass carbon removal technologies. You will own Charm's life-cycle analysis and first-principles modeling in addition to the long-term cost curve of development. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, you will work very closely with our Engineering and Research teams to leverage the insights from your quantitative analysis to identify opportunities to drive meaningful system improvements that will help Charm more effectively scale. You will also work closely with our Carbon Accounting team to build forward looking models into our proprietary carbon ledger system.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform and maintain techno-economic and life cycle assessments, as well as sensitivity and uncertainty analyses, for Charm's core carbon removal processes as well as related or competitive chemical pathways.
  • Own process flow diagrams and mass and energy balance models for a range of systems and processes.
  • Drive ad hoc analysis through dynamic models when new opportunities are identified.
  • Propose and create roadmaps for special research efforts, capital projects, and technology deployment.
  • Contribute to and coordinate with Charm's research team on high-leverage process modifications or extensions.
  • Translate roadmaps into financial costs and implications for budgeting and long-range planning.
  • Help represent pathways to key investors, customers, and other stakeholders evaluating Charm's technology-readiness.
  • Work closely with Engineering, Research, and Carbon Accounting to build cross-functional uniformity in technical and economic assumptions.
  • Coordinate with registry and verifier on core emissions assumptions for future validation.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Industrial, or other related engineering discipline.
  • Masters, PhD, or multiple years of experience in techno-economic analysis or life cycle analysis.
  • Deep analytical thinking and an ability to distill down complicated analyses into digestible formats for a range of teams.
  • An ability to problem solve independently.

Bonus (but not required):

  • Strong foundation in quantifying return on investment, net present value, or other key financial performance indicators.
  • Proficiency in a range of key data modeling tools, from Excel to Python to Aspen Plus.
  • Prior experience with a high-growth start-up.
