Job Summary

The Department of Ophthalmology is hiring a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant to help with our commitment to enhance patient care and comfort. As a valued member of our ophthalmology team, the ophthalmic assistant is responsible for assisting with all patient-oriented optical procedures, preparing patients for eye examinations, measure patients' glasses, and maintaining ophthalmic instruments. As an assistant, the Department of Ophthalmology is dedicated to your growth and will help you to advance your career in ophthalmology.

Job Duties
  • Assist ophthalmologists in treatment and care of patients.
  • Open, stock, clean, and close patient rooms.
  • Obtain basic medical history and ocular complaints from patients.
  • Measure patients' glasses.
  • Write and call-in prescriptions to pharmacies as directed by ophthalmologists.
  • Test ocular functions, including visual acuity, muscle balance, and intra-ocular tension.
  • Administer eye and oral medications as directed by ophthalmologists.
  • Change eye dressings and instruct patients and/or caregivers in home care.
  • Maintain ophthalmic instruments by sterilizing surgical instruments and cleaning exposed lenses, mirrors, and prisms and replacing burned out bulbs and batteries.
  • May provide guidance to entry-level Ophthalmic Assistants. Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
Experience and Education
  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • One (1) year of work experience in Ophthalmology (clinical program practicum experience preferred)
  • Must complete the home study course for Joint Commission of Allied Health personnel in Ophthalmology
  • Certified as COA by JCAHPO
  • One (1) year of college preferred
