Position Overview

The Ophthalmology Division is seeking a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant to support our dedication to enhancing patient care and comfort. As an integral member of our ophthalmology team, the ophthalmic assistant will assist with various patient-centered optical procedures, prepare patients for eye examinations, measure patients' glasses, and maintain ophthalmic equipment. The Department of Ophthalmology is committed to your professional growth and will support your advancement in the field of ophthalmology.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist ophthalmologists in the treatment and care of patients.
  • Prepare and maintain patient examination rooms.
  • Gather basic medical histories and ocular concerns from patients.
  • Measure and fit patients' glasses.
  • Process prescriptions as directed by ophthalmologists.
  • Conduct ocular function tests, including visual acuity and intraocular pressure.
  • Administer medications as instructed by ophthalmologists.
  • Change eye dressings and provide home care instructions to patients and caregivers.
  • Ensure the maintenance of ophthalmic instruments by sterilizing surgical tools and cleaning lenses and mirrors.
  • May mentor entry-level Ophthalmic Assistants, performing core functions related to patient care and record management.
Qualifications and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in an Ophthalmology setting (clinical program practicum experience preferred).
  • Completion of the home study course for Joint Commission of Allied Health personnel in Ophthalmology.
  • Certification as a COA by JCAHPO.
  • One (1) year of college education preferred.
