POSITION
We are seeking a dynamic and strategic Director of Finance to join our leadership team. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, this crucial role is essential for driving the organization's financial growth and stability, enabling the achievement of PSE's overarching goals.

As the Director of Finance, you will provide data-driven insights and recommendations to support strategic decision-making. Your proactive financial management style will influence daily operations. The role will oversee all administrative functions of the finance department, including payroll, grant reporting, developing organizational and project budgets, and establishing and implementing policies, reporting systems, and controls. The Director of Finance will ensure transparency and financial accountability by conducting comprehensive financial analyses, resulting in positive fiscal outcomes.

ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Partner with the leadership team to analyze financial data, identify trends, and offer strategic recommendations to enhance the organization's financial performance and long-term sustainability
  • Establish and develop the finance department by creating the financial framework, implementing processes, driving improvements, and building a dynamic team for effective financial management
  • Oversee the organization's finance functions including budgets, forecasting, cash flow statements, balance sheets, and income statements verifying accuracy and adherence to accounting principles and regulatory requirements
  • Lead our annual organizational budgeting process ensuring alignment with PSE's strategic programs, goals, and initiatives
  • Manage accounting tasks, such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, tax compliance, bank and credit card reconciliations, and banking relationships
  • Produce monthly financial statements and conduct continuous financial analysis to support organizational decision-making based on our financial position
  • Oversee the completion of all required annual filings, such as the IRS Form 990 and any necessary charitable registrations.
  • Work closely with our external auditing firm to facilitate the annual audit process. Provide them with the necessary information, documents, and access for a smooth and efficient audit. This includes managing the board's Audit Committee, while ensuring an effective and efficient audit process
  • Oversee financial aspects of grant development and execution, including ensuring that we are in compliance with all administrative and financial aspects of our grants and donations; oversee subcontracts and subgrants
  • Review and comment on all contracts from federal and state agencies, as well as independent contractors, to promote the best interests of PSE
  • Implement robust internal controls and best practices that mitigate the risk of successful cyber threats and enhance organizational cybersecurity resilience
  • Collaborate with Operations and Human Resources to conduct annual assessments of our compensation structure, employee benefits package, technology and software service providers to enhance current systems, strengthen security measures, improve the overall employee experience, and uncover potential cost-saving opportunities.
  • Monitor changes in legislation, reporting requirements, and financial best practices in the nonprofit sector to ensure regulatory compliance and timely filing of required forms or reports
  • Perform special projects and other related duties as required, directed, or as the situation dictates

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent knowledge of audit procedures, financial reporting, nonprofit accounting principles and regulations, including knowledge of Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) guidelines, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and IRS regulations governing tax-exempt organizations
  • Possess superior analytical capabilities to interpret financial data and derive actionable insights, coupled with the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with cross-functional teams, including those without extensive financial backgrounds
  • Proficiency in forensic accounting and financial analysis expertise, with the ability to identify potential irregularities or misappropriation of funds at the earliest stages. Proactive in communicating findings and recommendations to relevant stakeholders to mitigate risks and protect the organization's financial integrity
  • Exceptional emotional acuity, coupled with a strong sense of responsibility and utmost discretion when managing confidential or delicate situations
  • Highly organized and methodical with great attention to detail and the ability to multitask and manage complex projects, both independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills, including ability to identify, balance, and rapidly shift priorities as needed
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to build productive relationships and effectively collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders to prioritize tasks, negotiate effectively, and achieve results through cross-functional coordination

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Passion for and commitment to advancing the mission and values of PSE
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 - 7 years of experience in a senior financial management role
  • Proven track record of effectively managing finances in a non-profit setting, including budgeting, grant management, and compliance with funding requirements
  • Possess significant expertise in restricted grant accounting and adept at generating monthly Budget-to-Actuals (BTAs) reports for multiple grants
  • Experience managing federal grants, familiarity with 2 CFR 200 and the Uniform Guidance
  • Experience with indirect cost estimation and shared cost allocations, fringe cost estimation and recovery
  • Experience serving as the lead individual on an NGO audit
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with a track record of working cross collaboratively across teams and departments
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing priorities
  • Ability to maintain a positive and lighthearted attitude, appreciating appropriate humor in the workplace
  • High level of proficiency in financial software and data analysis tools (e.g., NetSuite, Xero, Paylocity, MS Excel, PowerBI, Tableau, etc.)
  • Candidates must have authorization to work in the U.S.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Professional certification such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)
  • Experience with a single audit
  • Experience with NICRA submissions and negotiations
  • Proven track record of operationalizing bold visions and ideas, leveraging creative approaches to systems, policies, and procedures to achieve organizational goals
  • Experience in preparing formal presentations with recommendations and summaries of financial results and forecasted results to Board of Directors
  • A keen intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn, with a proactive approach to identifying opportunities for growth and improvement

LOCATION and WORK CONDITIONS

Remote position in the US. The position may necessitate extended work hours during projects and occasional attendance at after-hours or weekend meetings or events.

The position involves sedentary work with minimal physical exertion, primarily focused on computer tasks that require extensive use of a keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
SALARY and BENEFITS
The Director of Finance is a full-time, exempt position. Salary range: $109K - $163K with possibility of deviation based on qualifications and location.
