The South Asia Region comprises eight countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) that range in size from India (with a population of over 1 billion) to Maldives (with 0.3 million people). The region has experienced a long period of robust economic growth, averaging 6% a year over the past 20 years. It was the second-fastest growing region in the world in the aftermath of the global crisis. This strong growth has translated into declining poverty and impressive improvements in human development. The percentage of people living below the poverty line fell in South Asia from 56% to 16% between 1981 and 2013. Still, the region remains home to a third of the worlds poorest, with 216 million people living below $1.9/day.

The South Asia Region:


HIRING UNIT

The South Asia Chief Economist's (SARCE) Office is the principal advisor to the regional Vice President. The Office provides high-quality analysis to the regional Vice Presidency and represents it in internal and external discussions among specialists. The Office maintains a network of academics and practitioners and promotes public debate in South Asia on topical economic issues.

The Office delivers a semi-annual publication on growth prospects and analysis of topical issues for policy makers in South Asia. It leads the preparation of stand-alone flagship publications that examine topical issues for South Asia in depth. It provides guidance and inputs for other analytical work of the Vice Presidency.

Chief Economist Office South Asia:

GE Position. The SARCE Office is looking for a Research Analyst with excellent data management and programming skills to work and contribute to its main tasks and product lines:

Manage data, improve data management, and prepare visuals for the South Asia Development Update, a semi-annual regional flagship report, and other stand-alone flagship reports.
Manage high-frequency datasystem and develop and maintain bespoke datasets and modelling exercises using EViews, Stata, or R.
Manage data and prepare visuals for SARCE publications, including analytical work, and for ad hoc requests from the South Asia VPU.

The successful candidate will be an integral member of the team working closely with the Chief Economist for the South Asia Region and senior SARCE staff.

Duties and Accountabilities: Under the direction of the SARCE Management Team, the Research Analyst will work closely with SARCE staff in the following areas:

Research, assemble, and manipulate data for SARCEs semi-annual South Asia Development Update report, and for one-off research projects.
Develop, use, and maintain SARCEs high-frequency data system and ad hoc econometric modelling.
Communicate with SARCE colleagues on work status, foreseeable problems, and processes.
Provide regular feedback to team leaders on challenges in data management and document production.
Provide input and quality control for SARCEs websites.

Selection Criteria

MA/MA or BA/BS with minimum of 2 years relevant experience in Economics, Statistics, or related field.
Familiarity with macroeconomic, financial, or other economic data.
Data management, visualization, analysis, and reporting. Ability to interpret and communicate statistical information in a clear and analytically rigorous manner.
Attention to detail, disciplined organizational skills, and reliability in completing task to SARCE standards.
