Duties
  • You will test, calibrate, repair, and perform maintenance necessary to insure reliability and efficiency of all thermal plants.
  • You will operate computer and human machine interfaces to troubleshoot boiler controls.
  • You will make routine adjustments to the boiler distributed control systems, burner management panels, and maintain, adjust, and repair flame scanners and coot blower controls .
  • You will conduct regular inspections of flow meter recordings, integrated flows, pressures, temperatures, levels, and analyzer readings (gas and water).
  • You will test and calibrate flow meters, gauges, transmitters, recorders, switches, and automatic controls using handheld electronic analyzers, test gauges, thermocouples, dead weight pressure testers, pneumatic load tester, and various equipment.

      This position has a Screen-out Element: The ability to perform common tasks including: 1) Conducting regular inspections of flow meter recordings, integrated flows, pressures, temperatures, levels, and analyzer readings (gas and water) both in the plant and out on distribution system, 2) Adjusting instruments, meters, switches, and transmitters found not functioning properly or improperly calibrated; 3) Testing and calibrating flow meters, gauges, transmitters, recorders, switches, and automatic controls using hand held electronic analyzers, test gauges, thermocouples, dead weight pressure testers, pneumatic load tester, and various equipment; 4) Determining tolerance and accuracy of integrating and recording instruments that control and monitor plant operations; 5) Analyzing the operating conditions by indicating and recording meters and gauges, reflecting load changes, steam temperature and pressure, flow of fuel, steam, air, flue gas conditions, and other controls; 6) Adjusting equipment as necessary for efficient operation including alarm devices, semi-automatic combustion controls, feed-water de-aerators, heaters, fuel heaters, internal chemical injection equipment, automatic stop valves, forced and induced draft fans, fuel and steam pressure control and relief valves, feed-water regulators and pumps; and 7) Tracking plant efficiency, using fuel specifications, steam tables and other guides while maintaining operational logs and compute data for boiler room log sheet.

      May be designated as Essential personnel and required to report for duty or held in a duty status to provide support before, during and/or after special emergency situations, such as, but not limited to, destructive weather, disasters or periods of an increased security threat.

      The incumbent must be able to work overtime as required. The work hours are subject to change. The incumbent may be required to stand a rotating work week such as ten (10) days on and four (4) days off.

      Incumbent is required as a minimum to obtain (within a year of employment) and maintain a valid fourth-class operator license using the National Association of Power Engineers criteria or its equivalent. Incumbent may be required to be certified as a Virginia Visible Emissions Evaluator if testing provided.

      Physical Effort: Moderate lifting up to 40 pounds is required. If a heavier lift is required, it must not be attempted without assistance. Must be able to work at a rapid pace for a short period of time. Occasionally required to perform work by stooping, bending, and reaching while in cramped and uncomfortable positions and by walking, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolds to perform work at various heights. Normal vision is required.

      Working Conditions: Some work is performed outside, and may require exposure to prevailing weather conditions. Working conditions in this position vary with a portion performed in relatively pleasant surroundings and a portion performed on rooftops, in equipment rooms, under buildings and in confined spaces. Subject to perform work in areas with high noise levels where ear protection is required. Working in very hot and cold environments, poorly ventilated and lighted areas is occasionally required and in some instances work in these conditions is for the duration of the shift. The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust, dirt, grease, and oil, and is subject to the possibility of scrapes, cuts, bruises, contusions, burns, electric shock, and eye hazards.
