Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a dynamic reporter to cover local higher education and youth culture in the Washington, D.C., region, a key beat at a time of campus clashes around free speech and expression, rising tuition costs and declining enrollment, and political fights over how colleges and universities are managed.

The ideal candidate brings sophisticated reporting chops, agile writing skills and boundless ideas for stories that hold to account the public officials and administrators who lead the region's many institutions of higher learning. This journalist should also have fresh thoughts on how to vividly and creatively capture youth culture, both on campus and off, and the generation of students coming of age in the current polarized environment.

Responsibilities:
Producing coverage that illuminates significant developments at more than a dozen universities and colleges across D.C., Maryland and Virginia, including Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, American, the University of Maryland system, the University of Virginia system, Virginia Commonwealth and Johns Hopkins, plus area community colleges.Identifying compelling stories about college affordability, campus political fights and major research discoveries, among other topics.Chronicling the area's distinctive youth culture and how it is shaping the DMV.Reporting across a range of higher education issues with the highest level of rigor and a commitment to fairness and accuracy.Collaborating with colleagues on the local desk and across the newsroom, including the national education reporters and the data and visual teams.

Preferred qualifications:
A track record of distinctive journalism in the public interest.Experience covering major breaking news stories, pursuing accountability targets and developing new conceptual and visual approaches to stories.The ability to write both quick-turn and deep dives clearly and concisely.A demonstrated talent for sourcing on a competitive beat.A collaborative mindset and eagerness to experiment with a variety of story forms.A quick metabolism and competitive drive.An abundance of ideas, energy and determination.Nimble and creative, and able to think clearly about the value of particular reporting targets.Exceptional communication and organizational skills.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is: $97, $162, The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
