Position Overview

The Night Respiratory Care Specialist at Houston Methodist is tasked with executing essential respiratory care functions as directed, encompassing a range of procedures from basic to advanced complexity. Responsibilities include the preparation, administration, and oversight of medications and treatment methods, gas therapy, ventilator management, spirometry, and support during bronchoscopy. The role may also involve conducting diagnostic assessments of the cardiac and respiratory systems when appropriate.

Core Responsibilities

  • Fosters a collaborative and positive workplace, actively engaging with team members to achieve departmental goals. Utilizes effective communication skills to relay critical patient information and engage in active listening and education.
  • Maintains high standards of service quality, ensuring effective communication with patients and healthcare professionals during all interactions.
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and serves as an advocate for patients, addressing ethical concerns and facilitating spiritual support for patients and their families.
  • Contributes to enhancing departmental metrics related to employee engagement and retention through peer accountability.

Service Responsibilities

  • Administers comprehensive respiratory care, including arterial blood gas analysis, pulse oximetry, spirometry, and other diagnostic tests. Prepares and monitors treatment modalities and medication delivery, ensuring effective ventilator support.
  • Conducts additional tests and procedures as assigned, such as Electrocardiograms and Holter monitoring.
  • Addresses the physical needs of patients through various respiratory care techniques, optimizing performance through appropriate positioning and technical adjustments while recognizing potential complications.
  • Utilizes peer accountability to enhance patient satisfaction scores within the department.

Quality and Safety Responsibilities

  • Performs troubleshooting, calibration, and preventive maintenance on respiratory equipment, adhering to departmental protocols and documenting all activities.
  • Assists physicians by conducting tests as ordered, ensuring the quality and reliability of results, and taking corrective actions as necessary.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, reporting near misses and contributing to the identification of trends to enhance safety and quality standards.

Financial Responsibilities

  • Accurately documents all patient care activities and procedures in the designated systems, ensuring timely charge entry.
  • Efficiently utilizes resources, minimizing waste and managing time effectively to prioritize daily responsibilities.

Growth and Innovation Responsibilities

  • Engages in projects aimed at improving patient care and operational efficiency, embracing new care pathways to enhance community service.
  • Identifies personal learning needs and seeks educational opportunities to advance skills and knowledge as a Respiratory Care Specialist.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited respiratory care program recognized by the relevant credentialing body.

Experience

  • Preferred: One year of experience as a Respiratory Care Specialist.

Licenses and Certifications - Required

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification.
  • State Licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, with a timeframe for compliance for current incumbents.

Licenses and Certifications - Preferred

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, depending on the assigned area.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification, depending on the assigned area.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrates the necessary skills and competencies to perform assigned duties safely, validated through ongoing assessments.
  • Proficient in English communication, both written and verbal, to ensure effective patient and employee interactions.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills and teamwork capabilities, ensuring excellent service delivery to patients and colleagues.
  • Possesses basic computer skills to manage patient documentation effectively.
  • Demonstrates effective time management and the ability to adapt to changing priorities with minimal supervision.
