Overview

This role is situated within the BLM Fire & Aviation Directorate, Division of Support Services, Site & Facilities Branch, specifically in the Security Section.

Position Availability

We anticipate filling a limited number of positions at this time; however, additional opportunities may arise from this announcement if they become available.

Competition for Safety Officer roles is legally restricted to individuals entitled to Veterans' Preference, provided such applicants are available for appointment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts entry control tasks at designated facilities.
  • Issues visitor passes and maintains logs for visitors and security incidents.
  • Performs vehicle and foot patrols of the facility and surrounding areas.
  • Responds to emergencies and provides first aid as necessary.
  • Investigates and documents unusual activities and incidents.
  • Drafts clear and concise reports to document security incidents.
  • Secures crime scenes, preserves evidence, and detains individuals until local authorities arrive.
  • Monitors access to restricted zones and equipment.
  • Operates and oversees surveillance systems and access control mechanisms.
  • Drives vehicles under various weather conditions; a valid state driver's license is required.
  • Utilizes computers and software for standard operational tasks.
  • Assists and guides employees and visitors as needed.
  • Monitors alarm systems and dispatches patrols as required.
  • Conducts security checks outside of regular business hours.
Employment Conditions

Qualifications

Specialized Experience:

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate that you meet the minimum requirements. Please ensure this information is included in your resume.

For GS-05: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level is required. This experience should involve work with a protective organization that includes safeguarding property from hazards such as theft, damage, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting lives.

Examples of qualifying experience include, but are not limited to: performing entry control and patrol duties for large facilities; monitoring alarm systems and surveillance cameras; and writing clear security logs and incident reports.

Experience can include both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles through National Service programs and other organizations.

There is no educational substitution for GS-05 and above.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of the announcement.

Federal employees in the competitive service must also meet Time-In-Grade requirements.

Physical Requirements: This role involves moderate physical activity, including walking, running, and standing for extended periods.

Work Environment: Duties are performed indoors and outdoors, in various lighting and weather conditions.

Drug Testing: This position is subject to drug testing in accordance with Federal regulations.
