Job Description

Job Title: Early Childhood Educator

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Early Childhood Educator to join our team at the Family YMCA of Marion & Polk Counties. As a Preschool Teacher, you will be responsible for creating a safe and engaging learning environment for our preschool-age children.

Responsibilities
  • Curriculum Planning:
    • Assist the Director with the implementation of daily lessons and curriculum.
    • Develop and implement a basic understanding of child development.
    • Teach children self-help skills and provide opportunities for independence.
    • Initiate activities and experiences that focus on all areas of development with consideration given to each child's individual needs.
    • Follow a written weekly lesson plan that will be posted and used as a daily guide.
  • Health and Safety:
    • Ensure the safety and well-being of all children enrolled in the program.
    • Follow snack protocol and post menu.
    • Care properly for program equipment and check daily for safety.
    • Organize and store equipment safely and easily accessible to children and staff.
    • Monitor indoor and outdoor space daily for health and safety concerns.
    • Report any health and safety concerns immediately.
    • Ensure children are in your line-of-sight and maintain proximity control.
    • Follow all YMCA Safety protocols.
  • Behavior Management:
    • Understand the difference between discipline and punishment.
    • Establish supportive relationships with children and implement developmentally appropriate techniques of behavior and group management.
    • Use positive verbal and non-verbal communication with children to build trusting and stable relationships.
    • Set and consistently communicate limits for acceptable behavior with logical, relevant, and immediate consequences.
  • Other Management Duties:
    • Supervise Site Aide within sight and sound and maintain ratios.
    • Take lead of Site when the Director is absent from the program.

Requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Obtain hands-on Pediatric First Aid & CPR Certification.
  • Food Handler's Card.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One of the following:
    • Completion of 20 credits (semester system) or 30 credits (quarter system) of training at a college or university in any child education or development program.
    • A one-year state or nationally-recognized credential for preschool-age children.
    • At least one year of qualifying teaching experience, with at least one year as a teacher, in a Certified Child Care Center or comparable group care program, in the care of preschool-age children.
    • Completion of 10 credits (semester system) or 15 credits (quarter system) of training at a college or university in any child education or development program. AND at least six months of qualifying teaching experience in a Certified Child Care Center or comparable group care program, in the care of preschool-age children.

Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • Must be physically capable of observing and listening for stressful situations at all times.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to quickly reach a person and/or situation to prevent harm.

Essential Functions:
