POSITION SUMMARY

Trout Unlimited Inc. is seeking dedicated, enthusiastic, and skilled individuals for seasonal roles in our Mid Atlantic Coldwater Habitat Program. We are looking to fill several entry-level positions for Watershed Survey Technicians. These roles offer flexible employment durations, with a maximum of 6 months or 1,000 hours of work. Lead technician roles are also available. Successful candidates will gain valuable training and hands-on experience in conducting comprehensive watershed surveys, assessing stream habitats, and evaluating conditions affecting watershed health.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct watershed survey activities, including assessments of stream morphology, aquatic habitats, riparian zones, road conditions, and stream crossings.
  • Navigate to remote survey sites, often requiring extensive hiking while carrying necessary equipment and utilizing GPS and topographic maps.
  • Work effectively in areas with limited cellular connectivity.
  • Adhere to strict data collection and assessment protocols.
  • Report any concerns to the supervisor and collaborate with relevant personnel as needed.
  • Engage in wading through streams and rivers under various flow conditions and weather scenarios.
  • Maintain and care for equipment, reporting any maintenance needs to the supervisor.
  • Occasionally camp overnight when survey locations are distant from the base.
  • Exhibit professionalism and integrity throughout all job functions.
  • Assist with additional tasks related to the watershed program, such as tree planting, stream restoration, road decommissioning, culvert replacement, water temperature monitoring, and outreach efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in physically demanding roles.
  • Ability to quickly learn new skills and techniques.
  • Willingness to work long hours in challenging environments.
  • Strong communication abilities.
  • Basic understanding of watershed health and functionality.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to pass necessary background checks.
  • A genuine passion for native fish species and their habitats.
  • Capability to work collaboratively within a diverse team.
  • Open-mindedness and receptiveness to constructive feedback.
  • Patience to endure various outdoor conditions, including insects, wildlife, and changing weather.
  • Experience driving large, off-road vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of fish habitats.
  • Field experience in aquatic environments.
  • Familiarity with aquatic habitat surveys.
  • Experience with GPS/GIS technologies.
  • Proficiency in laser level surveying.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Experience with electronic data collection methods.
  • Ability to navigate in remote areas.
  • Experience working effectively in team settings.
