Role Summary

The Seasonal Stream Habitat Technician will play a crucial role in implementing projects that enhance cold-water fisheries and benefit local communities. This position focuses on improving aquatic habitats, water quality, and biodiversity through various restoration efforts.

The technician will work under the guidance of the project coordinator, participating in a dedicated restoration team responsible for conducting instream habitat enhancements, stabilizing streambanks, and facilitating aquatic organism passage initiatives. Key responsibilities include the strategic addition of woody structures to streams, utilizing techniques such as strategic wood additions (SWAs), beaver dam analogs (BDAs), and post-assisted logjams (PALs). Additional tasks may involve small dam removals, evaluating streams for future wood loading, and documenting the success of previous projects.

The technician may also assist as a team sawyer, depending on their experience and preferences, ensuring the safe felling of trees. Tasks may include cutting trees into manageable pieces, transporting them using hand tools, and securing them in place with posts.

This role involves working in various remote locations, primarily in New England, with specific travel areas to be determined.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting fieldwork in remote environments under varying weather conditions.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment for all team members.
  • Assisting with the safe felling of trees as a team sawyer.
  • Transporting and positioning felled trees to designated habitat improvement sites.
  • Utilizing equipment to secure wood structures within stream channels.
  • Transporting necessary field equipment to and from project locations.
  • Operating hand-powered tools and equipment.
  • Assisting in topographic surveys and habitat assessments.
  • Collecting data and monitoring the effectiveness of restoration efforts.
  • This is a non-supervisory role with no budget management responsibilities.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Hourly pay ranging from $14 to $18, commensurate with qualifications.
  • Standard workweek of 40 hours, typically structured as four 10-hour days.
  • Mileage reimbursement for travel to project sites.
  • A work vehicle will be provided for transportation to and from project locations.
  • Housing accommodations will be arranged during the workweek.
  • Work boots and meals will be provided during the work period.
  • Opportunities for wilderness first aid training and saw certifications may be available.

Qualifications

  • Degree or ongoing studies in environmental science or a related field.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a small team.
  • Familiarity with natural stream design principles.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Willingness to work in challenging weather conditions.
  • Experience working in active stream channels on uneven terrain.
  • Field experience in tree felling or trail construction is preferred.
  • Training or certification in saw operation is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining hand tools.
  • Capability to hike and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Familiarity with data collection and navigation tools.
  • Willingness to travel as needed; a valid driver's license and personal vehicle are required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a creative approach to conservation efforts.
  • A genuine passion for the protection and restoration of trout populations and their habitats.
