Our approach transcends individual building projects, addressing broader systemic challenges that influence societal programs. Central to our mission is the development of analytical tools that advocate for sustainable and equitable communities throughout the Chicago area and beyond.

Key Role Responsibilities:

Sustainability (60% of role):
  • Conduct independent site evaluations following established guidelines, leveraging expert knowledge in Technical Specializations.
  • Oversee design and construction LEED initiatives, ensuring thorough review and compilation of LEED submissions, along with final quality assurance of team outputs.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly reports regarding budget and productivity, utilizing systems thinking to discern trends across various projects and initiatives.
  • Perform basic area take-offs and ensure quality control of deliverables.
  • Edit and assess energy specifications, review guidelines, and develop pertinent specifications.
  • Generate comprehensive analyses of sustainability contributions throughout the project lifecycle, detailing phases, rationales, and timelines.
  • Verify plans for overall compliance and facilitate internal meetings.
  • Formulate technical specifications for sustainability objectives, manage client expectations proactively, and lead client discussions.
  • Fulfill all criteria to function as an energy auditor, executing tasks within designated timeframes while overseeing and distributing work among the project team.
  • Conduct quality checks and corrections on field reports.
  • Utilize sustainable insights to contribute to project ideation and support efforts to balance workloads across the team.
  • Achieve one specialty certification in sustainability or architecture and share insights through internal learning sessions at least once annually.
  • Mentor junior staff in various professional aspects.
Assessment (20% of role):
  • Perform accurate and consistent field measurements using assessment tools (Level, laser measure, etc.), and produce corresponding plans and reports.
  • Conduct self-reviews of work quality to manage overall project progress and address any tracking issues.
  • Adhere to established schedules and communicate promptly regarding any scheduling issues related to on-site assessments.
  • Identify trends across multiple locations, quality checks, assessors, and other staff roles, providing practical solutions for the broader team.
  • Develop Quality Check reports and consistently monitor overall quality to meet company standards, proactively addressing performance concerns with management.
Architecture (20% of role):
  • Guide the drawing set and identify specific project requirements independently.
  • Integrate consultant information into drawings, understanding the relationship between codes and building requirements.
  • Comprehend how various drawings interconnect and how changes can impact multiple areas; maintain a strong understanding of HUS standards and ensure consistency in drawing requirements and formatting across the company.
  • Regularly propose technical solutions to data challenges; identify necessary information for reports with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with Technical Specializations, maintain an established NCARB file, and track Architectural Professional hours for future licensure.
  • Lead construction meetings as the HUS representative, resolving issues as they arise during the construction phase without oversight.
  • Manage internal meetings with an understanding of the relationship between project schedules, efforts, and costs (both internally and externally).
  • Accurately identify additional services required on a project.
  • Study for architectural exams and present internally on technical tools/skills at least once a year.
Qualifications:
  • Possess one Architectural or Sustainability-focused certification, actively pursuing architectural licensure, and maintain a willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated passion for sustainability and community-oriented architecture.
  • Interest in conducting swing stage façade inspections (training provided).
  • Ability to manage field assessments and reporting with minimal oversight.
  • Proficient in advanced energy modeling tools such as IESV, Energy Plus/Open Studio, TRNSYS, or similar.
  • Ability to work independently while excelling in team collaboration.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to clearly articulate delays, errors in deliverables, and specialization targets within sustainability or architecture.
  • Highly organized, capable of managing multiple project deadlines while remaining adaptable to changing demands and priorities.
  • Able to spend full days on-site documenting various aspects of a building.
  • Able to lift/carry approximately 10 lbs.
Requirements:
  • 7+ years of relevant professional experience with specific expertise in architecture and sustainability projects as the primary contact.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as architecture or engineering.
  • Experience with document submissions for architectural and sustainability projects.
  • Certification with a specialty in LEED.
  • Active engagement in professional organizations related to architecture and sustainability outside of HUSarchitecture.
  • A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for site evaluations.
