Our architecture firm, located in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, specializes in projects focused on low-income housing, public educational facilities, accessibility, and sustainability consulting. Our approach transcends individual building projects to tackle broader systemic challenges that influence societal frameworks. Central to our mission is the development of analytical tools that advocate for sustainable and equitable communities throughout the Chicago area and beyond.

Key Role Responsibilities:

Sustainability (60% of role):
  • Conduct independent site evaluations following established guidelines, leveraging expert knowledge in Technical Specializations.
  • Oversee design and construction LEED initiatives, ensuring thorough review and compilation of LEED submissions, and performing final quality checks on team outputs.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly reports detailing budgetary and productivity metrics, utilizing systems thinking to discern trends across various projects and initiatives.
  • Perform basic area take-offs and execute quality control measures on deliverables.
  • Edit and review energy specifications, aligning with provided guidelines to develop pertinent specifications.
  • Generate comprehensive analyses of sustainability contributions throughout the project lifecycle, including phases, rationales, and timelines.
  • Verify compliance of plans and facilitate internal meetings for project alignment.
  • Formulate technical specifications to meet sustainability objectives, proactively managing client expectations and leading client discussions.
  • Fulfill requirements to serve as an energy auditor, executing tasks within designated timeframes and guiding project teams effectively.
  • Conduct quality checks and corrections on field reports.
  • Utilize sustainable insights to contribute to project ideation and support equitable workload distribution among team members.
  • Achieve at least one specialty certification in sustainability or architecture and share insights through internal learning sessions annually.
  • Mentor junior staff in various professional competencies.
Assessment (20% of role):
  • Perform accurate and consistent field measurements using assessment tools, producing corresponding plans and reports.
  • Conduct self-reviews of work quality to manage project progress and address any tracking issues.
  • Adhere to established schedules, promptly communicating any scheduling conflicts during on-site assessments.
  • Identify and analyze trends across multiple locations, quality checks, assessors, and other staff roles, providing practical solutions for the team.
  • Develop Quality Check reports and consistently monitor overall quality to meet company standards, proactively addressing performance concerns with management.
Architecture (20% of role):
  • Direct the drawing set and identify specific project requirements autonomously.
  • Integrate consultant information into drawings, demonstrating an understanding of relevant codes.
  • Comprehend the interconnections among various drawings and the implications of changes across documents; maintain adherence to HUS standards and ensure consistency in drawing requirements.
  • Regularly propose technical solutions to data-related challenges; identify necessary information for reports with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with Technical Specializations, maintaining an established NCARB file, and tracking Architectural Professional hours towards licensure.
  • Lead construction meetings as a representative of HUS, resolving issues as they arise during the construction phase independently.
  • Facilitate internal meetings with an understanding of the interplay between project schedules, efforts, and costs.
  • Accurately identify additional services required on a project.
  • Prepare for architectural examinations and present on technical tools/skills internally at least once a year.
Qualifications:
  • Possess an Architectural or Sustainability-focused certification, actively pursuing architectural licensure, and demonstrate a willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrate a passion for sustainability and community-oriented architecture.
  • Interest in conducting swing stage façade inspections (training provided).
  • Ability to manage field assessments and reporting with minimal oversight.
  • Proficient in advanced energy modeling tools such as IESV, Energy Plus/Open Studio, TRNSYS, or similar.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills; clearly articulate delays, errors in deliverables, and specialization targets within sustainability or architecture.
  • Highly organized, capable of managing multiple project deadlines while adapting to changing demands and priorities.
  • Able to spend extended periods on-site documenting various aspects of a building.
  • Able to lift and carry approximately 10 lbs.
Requirements:
  • 7+ years of relevant professional experience, specifically in architecture and sustainability projects as the primary contact.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as architecture or engineering.
  • Experience with the submission of documents for architectural and sustainability projects.
  • Certification with a focus on LEED.
  • Active engagement in professional organizations related to architecture and sustainability outside of HUSarchitecture.
  • A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for site evaluations.
