Overview

The Energy Service Technician is responsible for the installation, upkeep, and repair of propane and oil heating systems, HVAC units, and associated appliances for customers of Southern States Cooperative, Inc. (SSC). This role may also involve the maintenance of diesel and gasoline tanks and machinery, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and SSC operational standards while working autonomously.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain consistent communication with management regarding service dispatching for installations, repairs, and maintenance of heating systems and appliances. Provide updates on job progress, scheduling, material supply, and other critical factors.
  • Safely execute the installation and repair of propane, oil, diesel, and gasoline systems in accordance with federal and state regulations. Calibrate equipment to optimal settings and utilize specialized skills and tools effectively.
  • Interpret and analyze electrical and mechanical schematics, manuals, and specifications to perform installations and troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Represent SSC positively by delivering reliable and prompt service to clients. Communicate professionally and courteously, providing usage instructions for serviced equipment and handling account details, including payments and future service confirmations.
  • Engage with customers to discuss new equipment sales, conducting site assessments to identify suitable products and assisting in informed decision-making.
  • Operate SSC commercial vehicles in compliance with safety regulations and perform routine maintenance to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Depending on the location, load and deliver propane and other fuels, adhering to standard operating procedures for handling and transportation.
  • Accurately prepare and maintain documentation such as invoices, reports, and maintenance records in a timely manner.
  • Keep comprehensive files on service manuals, parts, and equipment sold, ensuring all warranty parts are returned to suppliers for credit.
  • Assist in maintaining adequate inventory levels and participate in inventory control initiatives.
  • Engage in ongoing training and development to enhance job performance and stay updated on industry standards.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring tools and equipment are stored properly and waste is disposed of according to SSC procedures.
  • Adhere to safety protocols to prevent harm to oneself, customers, and property, utilizing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required, along with a minimum of two years of experience in the installation and repair of propane or oil heating systems and equipment. Previous experience with Southern States is advantageous.

Licenses and Certifications

  • HVAC, Liquid Propane Gas Fitter, or related trade license required.
  • Petroleum and/or Propane Certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Commercial Driver's License (Class C or Class B depending on location).
  • Hazardous Materials and/or Tanker Endorsement (or ability to obtain).

Work Environment

This position involves working in various settings, including driving a commercial vehicle and performing tasks at customer sites, often outdoors and in warehouses. The role may expose the technician to various hazards, including fuel odors, moving parts, and seasonal weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

This role demands continuous physical activity, including lifting, bending, and operating equipment. The technician must be able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and may need assistance for heavier loads.
