Overview

The Energy Service Technician is responsible for the installation, upkeep, and repair of propane and oil heating systems, HVAC units, and associated appliances for Southern States Cooperative, Inc. (SSC) clientele. This role may also involve the maintenance and repair of diesel or gasoline tanks and equipment, ensuring compliance with government regulations and SSC operational protocols while working autonomously.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain consistent communication with facility management regarding daily service dispatch for new installations, repairs, and maintenance of appliances and systems. Provide updates on installation timelines, job status, account matters, material supplies, and other essential factors.
  • Safely install and repair propane, oil, diesel, and gasoline systems, equipment, and appliances in accordance with federal and state regulations. Adjust equipment to the correct settings and utilize HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other specialized skills as required.
  • Interpret electrical and mechanical blueprints, manuals, engineering specifications, and control panels to carry out installations and repairs. Analyze information to diagnose issues and troubleshoot systems effectively.
  • Represent SSC positively by delivering reliable and prompt service to customers. Communicate professionally and courteously, providing usage instructions for all serviced equipment and appliances. Manage account details, process payments or invoices, and confirm future service with clients.
  • Engage in discussions about new equipment sales with existing and potential customers. Conduct site assessments to identify products and equipment that meet capacity requirements, assisting customers in making informed decisions.
  • Operate SSC commercial vehicles in compliance with government regulations and SSC policies. Perform routine maintenance to ensure vehicles remain in optimal condition.
  • Depending on location, may load and deliver propane and other fuels following standard operating procedures. Handle canisters and utilize loading equipment as necessary.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate invoices, reports, logs, and maintenance records for vehicles and equipment.
  • Keep comprehensive and current files on parts manuals, service manuals, and service bulletins. Maintain records on all sold equipment, including design specifications, bills of materials, follow-up reports, and warranty information.
  • Ensure the return of all in-warranty parts to suppliers with the necessary information for proper credit.
  • Manage parts inventory effectively and assist with physical inventory checks. Adhere to inventory control measures and assist with shipping and receiving as needed.
  • Participate in specialized training and certification programs to enhance job performance and stay updated on industry safety and operational standards.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment by keeping tools and equipment in designated areas, minimizing waste, and properly disposing of materials.
  • Adhere to safety protocols to prevent harm to oneself, customers, property, and co-workers. Utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required and comply with OSHA regulations and SSC policies.
  • Perform additional job functions as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required.

Experience: A minimum of two years of experience in the installation and repair of propane or oil-based heating systems (HVAC), equipment, and appliances, along with experience in diesel and gasoline equipment. Previous experience with Southern States is advantageous.

Licensing Requirements

  • HVAC, Liquid Propane Gas Fitter, or related trade license is required.
  • Petroleum and/or Propane Certification (or ability to obtain) is necessary.
  • Commercial Driver's License (Class C or Class B depending on location) is required.
  • Hazardous Materials and/or Tanker Endorsement (or ability to obtain) is necessary.

Work Environment

This position involves working in various environments, including driving a commercial vehicle and working at customer sites, often outdoors and in warehouse settings subject to seasonal temperatures and humidity.

Physical Requirements

This role requires continuous physical activity, including bending, lifting, and operating equipment. Specific physical demands may vary by location.

Tools & Equipment

Required tools include hard hats, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, and various specialized equipment as dictated by job requirements.
